Axial Yeti XL Now Available In Kit Form

That’s right, the Axial Yeti XL monster buggy is now available as a kit, which means you get to put it together yourself. That also means that you can install the electronics of your choice and give the body you own custom paint job. But that’s not all of the good news. Axial includes some of the most popular option parts in the box to give this version increased durability and better performance. Some of those items include lower link plates, turnbuckles, Icon Vehicle Dynamics threaded aluminum Big Bore 16 shocks and Falken WildPeak M/T replica tires. I’m really happy to see that they have included a long travel sway bar with the kit. This is something that is not included with the ready to run version and it really needs it as mentioned in my review in the Febuary 2015 issue of Radio Control Car Action magazine. The sway bar will greatly reduce chassis twist and make the buggy more driveable.  The independent front and solid axle rear buggy is powered by two LiPo battery packs and accepts any standard 1/8-scale brushless system.

Official Axial info after the pics, click images to enlarge

Axial Yeti XL Kit 1

Falken WildPeak M/T replica replace tires and black wheels replace the RTR version’s BF Goodrich Krawler T/A tires and chrome wheels.

Axial Yeti XL Kit 2

An independent front suspension and solid axle rear soaks up the bumps and the batteries are housed on the sides of the molded plastic chassis. The kit version includes a scale fuel cell that can be used as a weight box or to store additional electronics.

Axial Yeti XL Kit 3

Aluminum lower-link braces are new for the kit Yeti XL and stiffen up the plastic links. The long travel rear sway bar is a welcome addition and it keeps the chassis flat during hard launches and in turns. Icon Vehicle Dynamics replica threaded aluminum Big Bore 16 shocks are included in the kit. They have been updated with a silver finish and dual springs.

Axial Yeti XL Kit 4

A 1/8-scale power system and two LiPo batteries are going to put a lot of power through the drivetrain. A steel spur gear and dual disc slipper clutch are ready for 6S action. This is the same setup that you’ll find on the RTR.

Axial Yeti XL Kit 5

Once assembled, the Axial Yeti XL monster buggy is ready to tear up the dirt.

Marui Big Bear: Looking Back at RC’s First Monster Truck

Kev

This week, we go back in time to take a look at what most consider to be the first true RC monster truck: the Marui Big Bear. Back in 1984, this 1/12 scale crusher set the standard for a fat-tire stance with real monster proportions. the Big Bear is positively stone-age compared to today’s trucks, but it put monsters on the map.

Marui Big Bear

This beautifully restored Big Bear by UltimateRC forum member “poika6″ shows off just how nicely proportioned the truck was, and the injection-molded body Datsun body is very well executed.

Tamiya Wild Willy Shodog RCU

Tamiya’s wheelie-popping Wild Willy from 1982 inspired Marui’s “Super Wheelies” series in 1983, which would go on to spawn the Big Bear in 1984. Photo: shodog, RCUniverse.com

Marui Big Bear 2

With the body off, you can see how simple the Big Bear was. The chassis isn’t much more than a tray, nothing like today’s trucks. Note the spring-supported bumper and rear trailing arm suspension, like the Wild Willy. Photo: bigbear.mirage-performance.com

Marui Big Bear 3

The undamped and stiffly sprung suspension made for a sketchy ride on the rough stuff. Look how long that steering arm is! (bigbear.mirage-performance.com)

Marui Big Bear 1

We reviewed the Big Bear in the Summer 1986 issue of Radio Control Car Action. You would never guess from the photos, but the Big Bear is 1/12 scale and only 12 inches long and 12 inches wide.

Marui Big Bear 6

In 1987, Tamiya released the Midnight Pumpkin and Lunch Box, which further simplified the Wild Willy’s basic design and kept 1/12 scale alive as the scale for monster truck models. By going with 1/12 scale, the trucks were about the same size as 1/10 models of other vehicles, with basic running gear underneath to keep them light and rugged, and able to operate with decent performance on a 6-cell NiCD battery and 540 stock motor.

Tamiya Clod Buster

Then this happened… The Tamiya Clod Buster was released in late 1987 and it quickly took over as the king of the monster trucks. Its large size and dual motor power made it hard to resist. Aftermarket companies quickly jumped on the wagon and that helped move the Clod Buster into legend status. This truck paved the way for the monster trucks that we know and love today. Go here to see more pics of my classic Clod build, and click here to see the history of Tamiya’s solid-axle monster trucks.

Marui Big Bear 4

The Big Bear and similar “small monster” designs soldiered on even after the debut of the Clod Buster, and the Big Bear was a part of our monster truck shootout in the May 1988 issue. It was up against some big hitters including the Clod Buster, MRP High Roller and the Tamiya Bruiser. Guess what: the Big Bear ended up taking the overall win.

Losi 8IGHT & 8IGHT-T Go Gas, Get AVC – Nuremberg News

Losi’s gas technology is finally trickling down to other vehicles in the lineup. The next two vehicles on the list to get the innovational engine are Losi’s 8IGHT buggy and 8IGHT-T truggy. Losi has done a lot to make these RTR vehicles very user friendly. You get reliable power from the Dynamite .31 gasoline engine and it requires less maintenance and has a low operational cost. Losi even throws in a starter box to get the engine running. Other impressive features include AVC, a LiPo receiver battery and a 150cc fuel tank. These vehicles are the first of their kind and could change the face of buggy and truggy racing as we know it. We are very excited to get our hands on these new vehicles and get them in the dirt.

Kev’s Bench: Custom 1/5-Scale Trophy Truck

I have been a fan of 1/5-scale for many years. I love the size of the vehicles and have always been impressed by the performance that they give you. About 5 years ago I thought it would be cool to have a 1/5-scale trophy truck but the problem with that was that no one was making them. That’s why I decided to make my own! I had hoped that this truck would be done by now but life happens and I have had to set the truck aside to get some other stuff done. Here’s what is done so far.

Trophy truck 1

Everything you see in aluminum are parts that I designed in a CAD system. The inspiration for the chassis design came from a trophy truck that Robby Gordon was building. I really liked the Y-shape and make that happen on my truck. The shock towers will give me some suspension adjustment and the suspension arms are designed to look similar to what they use on full-size trucks. All the aluminum parts on this truck were made by my buddy Ed Cable. The plastic components that you see are from an HPI Baja.

trophy truck 2

Slowing things down is a hydraulic brake system with custom made carbon fiber discs and aluminum brake pads. The disc is going to be floating on multiple screws in the hub. I got this design from the many short course races that I have attended. They use a brake disc similar to this. I really liked the look of them so I had a few made up for my truck.

Trophy truck 3

Power for my truck is coming from a 23cc Zenoah engien. You may notice that it doesn’t look like the engine found in a HPI Baja or Losi 5IVE. It’s a marine engine and the reason for using it was for two reasons; it spools up faster and it’s cool to say that I have a water cooled engine in the truck. It’s something that no one has so why not. It will have a custom made electric starter that I will be able to operate from the radio and the gear mesh will be adjustable so that I can easily change out pinion gears.

Trophy truck 4

I have searched long and hard for a way to cool my engine and this is what I found. It’s a radiator for a computer and although it will do the trick I’m not a fan of the look and may make my own.

Trophy truck 5

I am installing a slipper clutch from HPI that is designed for the Baja series of vehicles. It will make it easier to control my truck during hard launches and will help protect the drivetrain from shock. It will be attached to a custom made shaft and mount.

trophy truck 6

Here are the lower links for the rear suspension. HPI Baja rod ends will complete the package.

Trophy truck 6

I started on the roll cage. The current tubing is 3/8 steel tube and I am brazing it together. I designed a custom clamp for my lathe so that I can feed the tube into an end mill at the right angle to fish mouth it and get a nice clean joint. This is as far as I have gone with the tubing and I plan on scrapping it because of its weight. The new cage will be constructed out of aluminum tube to considerably reduce the overall weight of the truck.

So that’s it so far. I am working on setting up a new spot to work on my truck and am investing in a few tools that will improve the project. I’m really  looking forward to getting this one done. What are your thoughts? Email me at kevinh@airage.com and let me know.

Kev’s Bench: Unboxing The Tamiya Grand Hauler

Kev

Saying that I was excited when Tamiya introduced the Grand Hauler is a major understatement. Out of all the Tractor Trailer rigs that Tamiya has introduced the King Hauler has been my favorite. A project on my long list involves a King Hauler and me stretching the chassis and adding a few touches to make it look like a custom rig that you would see at a big rig show. It looks like Tamiya has been inside my brain because the Grand Hauler pretty much looks like what I was planning on building. Luckily I didn’t have to wait for long after the truck was announced to get my hands on a kit. Let’s take a look inside the box and see what you get!

Tamiya Grand Hauler

The Grand Hauler comes in a large box with an awesome pic of the finished truck. Doesn’t that make you want to buy it? It looks just like a real truck.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

Don’t be intimidated by all of the parts inside the box. Tamiya makes it very easy to build with their great instructions and well packaged parts.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

The cab is borrowed from the King Hauler and thanks to its simplicity it doesn’t take long to paint like other trucks such as the Freightliner Cascadia Evo and Man that have a lot of body panels. This body however is not as easy to buff out when painted because of the rivets that are molded into it.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

Large molded rear fenders replace the smaller black ones that are found on all of Tamiya’s Tractor Trailer trucks. They are going to look great with a coat of paint and there’s plenty of room there for graphics. They wrap nicely around the rear tires of the truck.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

Tamiya Grand Hauler

It has a driver figure! I’m really excited that this truck includes a driver figure and just like others that Tamiya has produced this one is full of realistic detail. All the Tamiya trucks have a dashboard, a set of seats and a clear windshield and this is what they all have been missing. The good news is that the driver comes on its own parts tree so you can easily purchase one and add it to your rig to complete the package. This guy is smaller than the rest of the figures that Tamiya offers so if you want to grab this little guy for your Mountain Rider he will need a booster seat to see above the steering wheel.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

Look at all that chrome. This is just a touch of what you get with the Grand Hauler. You can see the custom grill, part of the stacks, rear bumper and more. If you want to build your truck without chrome, you can easily remove it from the parts with a little oven cleaner.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

Yes, that’s a lot of tire and you have to mount all ten of them on the wheels. The good news is that they fit tightly on the wheels and don’t require glue. Check out the realistic treads.

Tamiya Grand Hauler

A lot of gears, shafts, bushings and more are used to make the shiftable transmission work. It is easy to build but you have to pay attention to what gear goes where and where the clips go on the shafts.

I’m excited to get started on this build and I have a really cool color for the body. You’ll find out what that is when it comes out in Radio Control Car Action. This is going to be a fun build.

Axial Needs To Build This Solid Axle Monster Truck

Kev

I have spent years building solid axle monster trucks in a quest to build one that will out perform anything out there. I even designed and built my own truck from the ground up. The second I saw the back half of an Axial Yeti I knew that my dream of building the best handling truck was about to come true. I gathered up the parts, did some thinking, and ended up with what you see here. That’s all the info that you’re going to get on this one. To find out more you’ll have to check out the spring edition of Radio Control Monster Trucks. Here are a few sneak peak pictures. All we have to do now is get Axial to produce and sell this awesome monster truck.

0222_Axial_Yeti MT_Action (Copy)

Yep, it sure does carve up the turns! This truck is fast and handles very well.

0001_Axial_Yeti MT_Studio (Copy)

This build went together very well and in the end it looks like it’s something that came out of the Axial factory. Please build one Axial!

0010_Axial_Yeti MT_Studio (Copy)

A few simple custom made parts were needed to connect two rear Yeti suspensions together. An LRP power system, Futaba servo and radio and Maxamps battery make it go.

The Ones That Got Away

Kev

I’ve built a ton of trucks in my many years in RC and yet there are some that I never had the chance to build or modify. We all have the “I wish I had that or this” stories when it comes to RC and this is my time machine shopping list of the trucks that got away.

big bear

Marui Big Bear
I can still remember seeing the ad in Radio Control Car Action for the Marui Big Bear. I always liked the look of it but then I was able to see it in person at my local hobby shop and really fell in love. The body was well detailed, and how could you not like those big tires? The Big Bear wasn’t the best handling monster truck out there but for me its looks more than made up for that. Photo: iconicrc.com

MRP High Roller

MRP High Roller
This is a truck that you didn’t get to see much of back in the day. The MRP High Roller was one of the first scale monster trucks and it featured large terra treaded tires, scale engine, scale shocks and more. At first glance it looks like it may be a solid axle truck but it actually had front and rear independent suspension with the shocks mounted on the top arms. I always wanted to get my hands on one of these trucks but it never crossed my path. Photo: clodtalk.com

monster beetle

Tamiya Monster Beetle
The Tamiya Blackfoot was an iconic RC vehicle back in the late 80s but to me the truck that should have got as much love if not more was the Tamiya Monster Beetle. Although it was pretty close in design to the Tamiya Blackfoot it did have some differences such as the shocks, spiked tires, gold plated wheels and of course that trick beetle body. If I were able to get my hands on one I would stick with the box detailing then stare at it for hours. Photo: iconicrc.com

kyosho usa 1
Kyosho USA-1
The Kyosho USA-1 was a high performance dual motor truck from Kyosho that was often put up against the Tamiya Clod Buster. This truck was slightly faster and had an independent suspension system that soaked up bumps and jumps really well. I wasn’t able to get my hands on one when it was out in the 90s but with Kyosho entering the rerelease market maybe we will see a modern version of one in the near future. Photo: Ebay

Kyosho_USA-1_NC_001
Kyosho Nitro USA-1
The Kyosho Nitro USA-1 used a 1/8-scale buggy as a platform and was nitro powered. It was one of the top nitro powered trucks of its time and we even featured a few Nitro USA-1 projects in Radio Control Car Action back in the day. I wasn’t able to get one back in the day but maybe I can build a modern day version. Could you imagine getting your hands on the body, tires and wheels and attaching all that to a modern day buggy chassis? That would be one sick truck! Photo: tamiyaclub.com

Latest from REDS Racing:

Reds Racing have released their new M3 World Touring S, a 2.1 cc engine for the 1/10 On-road Touring Racing class.

The new engine offers the most advanced technologies to get the best performance and reliability.

The WTS has been provided with a new extra long stroke which guarantees extreme torque and high power. The Extra Long Stroke engine geometry gives exceptional power at low-medium RPM for a greater acceleration.

Another main feature is the all-new 7mm front crankshaft and bearing, made on purpose to guarantee higher stiffness and better performance.

Furthermore, the WTS features a stiffer crankcase and a new lightweight cooling system. The WTS is also one of the lightest engines in its category thanks to a redesigned cooling head and due to a new combustion chamber and back-plate design.

REDS M3 WTS is hand-tuned by Mario Rossi and comes with a silicone-filled, balanced and tuned crankshaft.

Before leaving the factory each engine is hand inspected and compression checked by Mario Rossi for maximised performance. On top of that there are also already broken-in engines available.

Kev’s Bench: Axial Yeti XL Build, DONE

Kev

I just wrapped up a how-to on building the Axial Yeti XL kit for the June issue of Radio Control Car Action. It’s a fun build and I highly suggest that you have plenty of room to get through it. The parts for this bad boy are pretty large. While you’re waiting for the issue to come out I though that I would give you a sneak peak at the finished buggy. This sucker is a beast!

Axial Yeti XL 1

The Yeti XL kit comes with a rear sway bar, which does a great job of keeping the chassis more flat in the turns. If you made this move with the RTR the front tire would be much higher in the air.

Axial Yeti XL 9

The Yeti XL kit has a functional spare tire that not only adds more weight but it puts it pretty high up in the air. The extra weight in the rear actually helps with stability and made the Yeti XL easier to drive than the RTR version.

Axial Yeti XL 6

When you mash the throttle, the chassis stays flat and the tires don’t diff out which allows it to do a better job of using all four tires to put power to the ground. You have to choose a 1/8-scale speed control and motor for your build and I went with a Tekin RX8 Gen2 system for mine.

Axial Yeti XL 2

When you finish your build the chassis will look like this. Note the Falken tires, dual springs, reinforced rear arms, and weight box (disguised as a fuel cell), which are unique features for the kit Yeti XL.

Axial Yeti XL 4

Not only is this buggy packed full of adjustments and performance but it also has the look of a full-size rock racer. Note the 17mm wheel hexes; they open the door for aftermarket tires and wheels.

Axial Yeti XL 5

The roll cage on the Yeti XL isn’t just there for looks, it’s also a functional piece. To get to the electronics you simply remove the two front body clips and tilt it up.

Axial Yeti XL 7

The spare tire isn’t just there for looks. It’s a functional piece and easy to remove thanks to the winged nut holding it in place.

Axial Yeti XL 8

The driver compartment is made from a molded piece of Lexan so just like the body you paint it from the inside. The driver heads however require paint on the outside so for that I used a can of red paint from Testors. Axial includes three different heads to top off the body; a street bike style, MX syle or old school open face helmet with skull face.

Tamiya Announces New VW Amarok and Pre-Painted FJ Cruiser Kits

Tamiya’s new VW Amarok is based on the WT-01 chassis. Tamiya has offered the WT-1 in a 4WD configuration, but we expect this to be the 2WD version as used on the Blackfoot III, Bush Devil II and Mud Blaster II trucks.  You can read more about it in the 2WD truck shootout that we had in the March 2015 issue. The unique VW Amarok body really makes this truck stand out. If that truck isn’t your style, you can take a look at the FJ Cruiser that’s now available with a pre-painted body. This one is based on Tamiya’s CC-01 Cross Country chassis and comes pre-painted with an orange body. The CC-01 chassis is a popular one with the scale crowd and has features such as 4WD, solid rear axle, oil filled shocks and electronic speed control. The clear-body version was on the cover of our July 2014 issue–good lookin’ truck.

tamiya 1

It’s weird to see a VW grill and badge on a lifted pickup, but it’s definitely a sharp truck. Friction shocks keep the cost down.

tamiya 2

The pre-painted CC-01 will look just like this when you’re through wrenching. Tamiya’s onto something with their “you build it, we paint it” concept, especially for scale topics. Tamiya does a great job with their factory-finished bodies.

Here’s the FJ on our July 2014 cover.

Tekno Introduces Lightweight 1/8-scale Electric Buggy

Tekno Introduces Lightweight 1/8-scale Electric Buggy

We are seeing a trend in 1/8-scale electric racing where people are building lightweight 1/8-scale buggies out of 4WD short course trucks. Tekno RC is one such company that is on top of this trend and it has recently introduced its own version of a lightweight buggy called the EB48SL. Basically what you get is a Tekno  SCT410.3 short course truck with the parts needed to turn it into a lightweight 1/8-scale electric buggy. Once built you have a platform that can run lighter weight and cheaper electronics such as a 2S LiPo, 550 motor and smaller speed control. This trick buggy has features such as a super narrow layout, low CG lightweight motor mount, triple gear diffs and lots of adjustment to allow it to tear up the track. We really love where this trend is taking us. Will a lightweight nitro buggy be next?

Keep up with all the latest gear–bookmark our Hot News & New Stuff forum!

tekno 2 tekno 3 tekno 4

From Tekno

  1. At Tekno RC, we pride ourselves on listening to our customers and responding to popular demand. After releasing the original SCT410 4×4 SC truck, many people were ‘converting’ the SC platform into a 1/8th scale buggy that utilized the lighter drivetrain and suspension components of the SC. This led us to release a conversion kit to accomplish the task easier. The acceptance in the marketplace was immediate, as many customers could now run a 1/8th scale buggy using 2s lipo batteries and Pro4 motors and ESC’s. Furthermore, they could run on some tracks that didn’t allow for ‘full weight’ 4s lipo powered beasts.

Then we thought, “why not make it even easier for our customers to get what they want and offer a full blown SL kit?” Enter the EB48SL. Tekno RC was the first company to offer a purpose built 1/8th electric buggy when it hit the scene a few years ago. And now we’ve done it again with the first purpose built ‘Super Light’ 1/8th electric buggy. The EB48SL is built on the new SCT410.3 platform and shares ~95% parts compatibility with it. All of the new improvements and features put into the SCT410.3 are all present in the EB48SL, along with a couple others specifically for the buggy.

The EB48SL represents a new and emerging class that is far more accessible to more people just starting out in the class. Batteries, motors, and parts are less expensive than their full weight 1/8th cousins. The kit itself is also an undeniable value and is backed by the best customer service in the industry.

But enough of that – how does it perform on the track? ‘Easy to drive fast’ would be the best way to describe the SL. Full traction patch of a 1/8th scale tread with much less weight and a touch less power results in maximum traction and corner speed. The EB48 is known for it’s steering, jumping ability, and efficiency and the SL continues this legacy.

Lightened differentials, lightened driveline, and lightened aluminum parts are standard and used throughout. 16mm bore, aluminum threaded body, long travel shocks are standard. Updated SCT410.3 suspension geometry is standard. Split center diff mount and lightened chassis are standard. This is how we say ‘thank you’ to our customers, by providing maximum performance at a reasonable price.

THIS IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR THE EB48.2. THIS IS A NEW 1/8th BUGGY KIT FOR AN EMERGING RACE CLASS.

    EB48SL Features:

Thunder Tiger Jackal Trophy Truck Update

A few months ago we showed you body on photos of Thunder Tiger’s prototype Jackal trophy truck and now we’re able to show you what’s going on under the hood. Some of the parts appear to be prototypes (note the rough surfaces), but it looks like the truck is going to have shaft driven 4WD and a multi-gear transmission with slipper clutch. Having the weight of the spare tire and battery tray over the rear tires should help settle the rear end and keep it in good contact with the ground. Long travel rear suspension, adjustable rear roll center, 3900Kv brushless motor and easy-access battery tray are feature highlights. This looks like a fun truck and we hope that Thunder Tiger has the production model done soon. We want to play!

See below for Thunder Tiger hype, and visit the Jackal page in our Hot News & New Stuff forum for more pics.

RPM Announces Shock Hoops & Body Mounts for Axial SCX10

RPM is venturing further into the trail and crawler scene, which is good news since many machines could use the durability of RPM’s indestructible parts. These new shock hoops for the SCX10 are not just a stock replacement deal, instead they offer several mounting positions for the shocks to change shock angle and raise and lower the truck’s ride height. The stock screws secure them to the chassis and upper and lower wings wrap around the chassis for increased strength. The system also includes stronger body mount for those tough roll over and body landings. I’m going to be scoring a set of these for my truck and I can’t wait to see what the guys come up with next.

From RPM

RPM front and rear Shock Hoops and Body Mounts for the Axial SCX10 are an affordable alternative to stock that improve durability and increase suspension options. Our versions incorporate stock shock mount locations along with two upper and two lower shock mounts (for a total of 7 shock mount options) that raise or lower the suspension just over 5mm (.205”). Simply moving the upper shock mount to one of these locations via one screw per shock makes ride height changes simple, cheap and very effective.

RPM Shock Hoops use a unique frame mount that wraps both above and below the frame rails to help reduce the amount of impact forces transferred through the mounting screw’s threads. Our C-clamp style mounts also improve structural rigidity of the shock mount for more accurate and precise suspension set-ups.

As a bonus, the included Body Posts are more stout and stronger than stock plus they bolt to RPM Shock Hoops using two screws for a secure body post that won’t rattle around. With a fixed set of body posts, your scale rig will look even more realistic since the body won’t be shifting around while you’re climbing and crawling.

RPM Shock Hoops and Body Mounts are a lightweight alternative and built from our bulletproof blend of engineering grade nylons for unsurpassed performance at an unbeatable price!

Tech Notes: RPM Shock Hoops will not work with stock body posts. Included body posts must be used. RPM Shock Hoops & Body Mounts are tested and guaranteed to fit with stock Axial #AX30502 frame rails only and replace #AX80025 Shock Hoops & #AX80031 Body Posts.
