Axial Wraith Spawn Now Available In Kit Form

I always love it when Axial introduces a kit version of a vehicle that was only available in RTR form before. I enjoy building and with these kits you get parts that were option parts for the RTR version and a vehicle that is slightly better performance wise and a little more durable. The latest RTR to be turned into a kit from Axial is the Wraith Spawn. This full bodied truck features a full tubular chassis, 4-link suspension and Axial’s proven AR60 axles. The body for this one comes clear so you can give it that personal touch and the electronic choice is up to you. Other trick features include officially licensed 2.2 Method IFD beadlock wheels, 2.2 Maxxis Trepador tires and Icon Vehicle Dynamics threaded aluminum shocks. My truck is on the way and I am looking forward to this build and some serious back yard bashing.

What’s Cooler Than a Jet Engine in a Boat? TWO Jet Engines [VIDEO]

I am a fan of RC boats– the bigger the better. Gas power is cool, electric power is impressive, but a boat with two turbine engines is just mind blowing. Yep, those are two mini turbine engines that you would normally see in a large scale RC jet and this guy shoved them into a sweet catamaran hull. When I get to the point in life where I have money to burn, I am totally building one of these!

I’m building a Durango DNX8!

Kev

The outdoor off-road season is here and I am currently building a new Durango DNX8 to get some track time with. This is the latest and greatest nitro 1/8-scae buggy from Durango and I can’t wait to dig into the build. Let’s take a look at what I have going on for the local off-road track.

DNX8 2

The DNX8 comes in an attractive well organized box and all the bags are well labeled and go along with the different steps in the manual. The manual is also well organized and should be pretty easy to follow.

DNX8 3 (Small)

While looking over the bags I saw that Durango does some of the building for you. Yippee! I’m used to seeing turnbuckles or shocks prebuilt but not all this. The less I have to build the better. Thanks Durango!

DNX8 4 (Small)

Power for my buggy is going to come from O.S. Speed Ty Tessmann Edition engine and pipe. It’s the same combo Ty used to win a 1/8-scale off-road world championship. It’s sure to get me to the front of the pack on any race weekend.

DNX8 5 (Small)

To control the DNX8 I am using a Futaba 4PX radio, BLS471SV and BLS371SV servos and a Duratrax LiPo receiver pack. I used this same combination in my Ty Tessmann Edition HB truggy and really liked the performance that it provided. This buggy is a little lighter than that truggy so it should be even more responsive. Grip is going to be provided by the JConcepts tires that are currently on the way.

IMG_4221 (Small)

This will be my first build with my new set of O.S. Speed tools. They feature black anodized handles, strong shafts, red anodized end caps and won’t roll off your workbench. The tips on the hexes are precision ground and fit the screws really well.

I’m staring my build pretty soon and I should have an update for you next week. Stay tuned!

Turnigy’s B405 Packs Big-Charger Features in a Pocket Size

Turnigy’s B405 is about the same size as a standard 2S LiPo, making it easy to carry along. As expected for a charger of this size, it’s DC-only. So, if you’re also bringing a power supply along, that takes away the “tiny charger” advantage. But if you’re using the 12v battery of the vehicle that took you to the track as your charger, then the B405 will definitely lighten up your pit box, and leave a lot more room for lunch.

The extra cab look is defined by the recessed windows and the roof has a unique center channel and extruded touches emulating the roof-carrying system shown on the prototype Atlas vehicle. The bed and fender area maintain a couple features that pique interest including sculpted out areas which look the part of the tie-downs on cargo walls and bed floor which are so commonplace in today’s’ pickup trucks.

JConcepts has added the tailgate step feature on the rear which doubles as cargo cradle in the scale world. The tailgate itself is completely detailed which drops to the cut-line and finishes with a scribe-line specifically for the Ford blue oval decal. The Atlas includes a decal sheet for headlight, taillight with Ford and Atlas logos throughout. Additional decal trimmings include miscellaneous JConcepts logos, grill, door handles and exhaust tips. 5 Reasons Why Truck Pulling Is Cool

5 Reasons Why Truck Pulling Is Cool

Kev

The more I look around on the internet the more I see custom pulling trucks popping up. I’m excited about this trend and am really excited to build one of my own. Some may ask why I’m so into building a pulling truck and I am here to show you. These are my 5 reasons why pulling is so cool.

11094723_1084768154873965_3318141953177475431_n

1. They Look Awesome
Part of what had drawn me into full-size pullers is the detail in the trucks. They are super clean and are built well enough to be entered into a car show and the same thing goes for the RC version. The people building them not only have clean builds but they do their best to make their trucks look as scale as possible. You can see tricked out 4WD pullers with narrow rear axles or perfect scale replicas of diesel tractors that have working smoke stacks.

1393593_749709965046454_288186646_n

2. They Can Pull About 6 Times Their Weight
These trucks sure do look good but they are also pretty impressive when you hook them up to a sled. On average these trucks can pull about 6 times their weight on dirt. If you get them on carpet where the traction is increased, that number goes up considerably. This is all done with the help of various weights that are placed on the chassis, pulling hitch height, front suspension setup and a locked out rear suspension. Of course they are also geared much lower than the RC cars that you can find at the hobby shop. If you ran a truck without weight behind it you would see a top speed of only a few MPH.

1507772_780263205324463_31543289_n

3. You Can Build Your Own Custom Rig
As I mentioned before you can’t buy these trucks at your local hobby shop so that means that you’ll have to look into building your own. There’s no need to worry because you have a few options for making this happen. If you have some basic tools such as a drill press and band saw you can make a few custom pieces and you have a truck. Don’t think that is something you can do? Well, then you can get involved in a pulling group such as the NR/CTPA and through the people there you can find a guy who will do it for you. Or you can go in a new direction and use a standard Axial SCX10 chassis and with a few simple tweaks have a pulling truck that you can call your own. When building a custom rig the possibilities are pretty much endless and you can go as extreme or as subtle as you want.

IMGP17094. You Aren’t Limited to a Pulling Sled
Sure it’s cool to go out with your new custom rig and hook up to a weight transfer sled and see how much weigh you can pull, how far you can pull it and how fast you can do it. Weight transfer sleds aren’t readily available but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use a simple piece of wood with a bunch of weight on it to see who can get their truck hooked and how quickly you can pull it a certain distance. Some trucks will be able to easily pull the weight while others may struggle to get the tires hooked up. Either way you and your buddies will have a blast trying to one up each other.

941299_755414857809298_1769277447_n

5. It’s a Family Sport
The best thing about truck pulling is that it’s a family and friends kind of sport. Pulling doesn’t require a large area to make it happen so it can be done at various types of gatherings and pretty much anyone can do it. You hook your truck up to a sled, work the throttle and keep it between the edges of the track.

Now do you see what I am talking about? I have been gathering pictures and ideas for a pulling truck of my own and I can’t wait to get started. It’s going to be a 4WD puller with custom body work and paint and some trick details that I’ll make using my Zeus 3D printer.

JConcepts Goes 1/5-scale Racing With New “Chasers” Tire

JConcepts is well known for 1/10 and 1/8 racing tires, and now they’ve added 1/5 scale rubber to the list. The new Chasers design has an aggressive tread pattern inspired by 1/8 scale  tires, and features a reinforced carcass to reduce tire expansion and to give more support during hard cornering. The tires fit Losi 5T wheels.

Full press info after the pics. For more new products, check out our Hot News and New Stuff forum, updated daily!

JConcepts Chasers 1/5-scale tire

JConcepts Chasers 1/5-scale tire

From JConcepts:

JConcepts enters the 1/5th off-road scene with the hefty Chasers tire.

The 1/5th Chasers rely on hefty, medium lugs which are angular in multiple directions. The horizontal type tread has a striking similarity to the trusty 1/8th buggy Crossbow tire which has remained a favorite for many years. Chasers have a squatty, close lug arrangement which gives incredible responsiveness and bites in all conditions. The wet and dry condition tire has small recessed cuts in the top of the tread for extra edges and increased formability over terrain. The center overlapping bar treatment increases durability in the highest wear region of the tire.

The outer sidewall has added tread at the top which provides extra reinforcement for those tough outdoor conditions. The outer V-lug also provides some paddle traction in loose sand or muddy conditions giving the Chasers ultimate versatility. The inner carcass has extensive ribbing in a hatch pattern increasing the durability in the center of the carcass while also limiting high-speed tire expansion. The inner sidewalls have been reinforced with vertical ribbing arranged in a circular pattern which gives more support during hard cornering.

To make them interchangeable, the tire beads and inner carcass have been designed to use the stock Losi 5ive insert and fit directly to the already established bead-lock wheel. The inner tabs built into the carcass interlock with the Losi bead-lock style wheels for security. JConcepts sidewall lettering stands out perfectly indicating the directional nature of the 1/5th tires with styling and name icons embossed.

Recently, Matt Olson utilized the Chasers tire in yellow compound at The Dirt Nitro Challenge and at events throughout Southern California with smashing success. All new tires have been rigorously tested for performance and durability by experienced drivers. The Chasers have the championship DNA tread and compound combination that racers have been waiting for from JConcepts.

Features:

•JConcepts original tread, grippy yellow compound

•Hefty, horizontal and low-profile tread, close arrangement

•Recessed pins provide extra dig edges

•Sidewall tread for increased paddle traction

•Bead and carcass sized for compatibility

•Carefully shaped carcass = forward traction

Airtronics Introduces All-In-One Speed Control/Receiver

We love when new RC technology hits the scene and this new Super Vortex-Plus ZERO speed control from Airtronics is one of those deals. At first glance this may look like a standard speed control but if you look closer you’ll see that there are two ports on the side and that means that this sucker doubles as a receiver. The speed control/receiver combo is the same size as a standard speed control so this is perfect for those vehicles where space is limited. The speed control itself is a sensored based unit that is capable of running up to a 2S LiPo and down to a 3.5 turn motor (when on 1S) and the receiver portion is compatible with certain Airtronics receivers. Pretty cool stuff!

Monster Mayhem With Gravedigger at the No Limit RC World Finals

Kev

Let the fun begin: I’m at Diggers Dungeon, home of the Grave Digger monster truck and the 10th Anniversary of the No Limit RC World Finals! There’s going to be lots of exciting action along with sights and sounds you can’t find anywhere else. Stay tuned for updates from the event!

World finals

Seeing multiple generations of Grave Digger monster trucks is just one of the many things you can do at the Dungeon.

Day 1

Day 1 consisted of qualifying for all classes competing in the side-by-side racing. Recent rains that made the track a bit of a mud pit so nothing was able to happen until it was dry. Eventually the water was out of the way and it didn’t take long for the No Limit crew to get it back and put back together. The dirt was fluffed up and traction was pretty good in the beginning but it quickly packed down and became a little harder to get a hold of. When qualifying at this even you get to make one pass in the left and right lanes. The first pass for most was a quick reminder of how slick the surface was and how much throttle control was necessary to get your truck from beginning to end. The second pass was generally the fastest for all the racers. The people who have the biggest advantage this weekend are the ones who are running multiple trucks because they are getting more laps and therefore more comfortable.

World finals

The No Limit crew had the track ready to race on in no time. Rough dirt with lots of traction started the day but it quickly turned into a slick, hard to get a grasp on deal.

World finals

Solid axle monster trucks rule this race. They make up the largest class at the event and word is that there are over 80 of them here.

World finals

The jumps are a bit on the steep side which have caused some interesting landings today. They should wear down a little as the race goes on.

No Limit RC: Show N Shine, Racing And Dennis Anderson Hangs Out

The second day of the 10th annual No Limit RC World Finals started out with a little Show N Shine time. Everyone running a truck at the event brought their trucks out to the track to display all their hard work. After looking the trucks over and getting lots of photos the participants of the event joined Dennis Anderson (Grave Digger monster truck creator) for a group photo. After that, Dennis hung out and judged them all for the Show N Shine portion of the event. Qualifying continued for the classes that weren’t able to get finished up the night before and for anyone who arrived on Saturday morning. The track wasn’t much better today but everyone seemed to have a little more control of their trucks and we did see some close racing all day long.

No Limit RC World Finals

Mr. Grave Digger Dennis Anderson took the time to hang with his fans and judge the Show N Shine portion of the event.

No Limit RC World Finals

There were some impressive trucks in the Show N Shine competition. This Avenger is just one of the many that caught my eye.

No Limit RC World Finals

If you want to see some of the sickest pulling trucks out there, make your way to a No Limit RC event. How cool are these trucks!

No Limit RC World Finals

The track started to come around today and we say some exciting racing with some very close finishes.

No Limit RC: More Racing, Truck Pulls And Hill & Hole Action

Racing was cut short last night due to the darkness coming in before the guys were done so today started off with more racing action. The morning was packed full of Nitro Monster Truck, Electric Monster Truck and Solid Axle side by side racing. Again the racing was close and there was nothing cooler than watching all the solid axle trucks doing battle. It was as if we were watching mini Monster Jam action. While the racing was going on, a second track was built, the sled was busted out and the truck pullers flexed their muscle. These guys easily had some of the craziest trucks at the event and were pulling up to 100 pounds of weight with little effort. Dennis Anderson and Grave Digger came from mud racing and that is a growing part of the No Limit RC World Finals. Today the guys ran their high powered trucks through a course and mud pit called the Hill and Hole which is a similar event that is held down the street at Dennis Anderson’s Muddy Motorsports Park.

No Limit RC World Finals

The solid axle trucks made up the biggest class at the event and they were the last racing class of the weekend.

No Limit RC World Finals

Here a nitro powered puller gets the smoke rolling as the tires dig in and pull that heavy sled down the track.

No Limit RC World Finals

Here’s a replica of Dennis Anderson’s first Grave Digger mud truck and like the full-size truck this one attacks the mud like nobody’s business.

Along with scale appeal, Axial’s wheel-well kit adds protection for your electronics by keeping mud and water from splashing up into the chassis. The wells have a realistic textured finish and are molded in clear Lexan so you can paint them black like you see on full-size trucks, match to body color, or whatever you like. Install is easy with included double-sided tape. I’m looking forward to adding these to a few builds.

Be sure to follow our Hot News & New Stuff forum for the latest gear on the daily.

Novak Adds New Functionality & Motor Combo to M2 Dig Line

Novak has updated the M2 Dig speed control with a fourth throttle profile that let’s you independently control a brushed motor and a motorized accessory. “Use one side to run the vehicle motor, and the 2nd side to operate the vehicles’ winch or other accessory device. No more pre-mixed operation or ‘dig’ settings needed in this mode. Each channel is operated on its own input from the radio system. Setting up “tank style” vehicles, or using the radio mixing to setup multi-motor controls is easy, all in one package,” says Novak.  In addition to the Rock Star motor combo, you can now get its M2 Dig speed control with dual Terra Claw motors in the same box. Just open the box and you’ll have all you need to give your dual motor truck serious climbing power with a lot of tuneability. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one of the M2 Dig combos and putting the independent accessory control capability to work.

For more new products be sure to check out our Hot News and New Stuff forum, updated daily!

Novak M2 Dig and Terra Claw combo

Novak M2 Dig and Terra Claw combo

From Novak

In addition to Novak’s expert M2 Dig Combo with its Rock Star brushed motors (#1847), Novak is offering a second combo pairing the M2 Dig ESC with its entry-level 55T Terra Claw motors for a lower cost system. The M2 Dig is like no other ESC in the market, and precisely controls two brushed motors (or one motor and one accessory item like a winch) in both forward and reverse directions with zero delay. With four unique driving modes and a fully programmable on-board interface, applications range from scale/crawling vehicles to robotic, tank, and boat/submarine applications. The M2 Dig operates on both 2S and 3S LiPo packs and includes an external BEC module recommended for 3S applications.

New Dual Independent Mode Controls 2 Motors or 1 Motor + Winch

Novak’s new 4th driving mode allows independent control over two brushed motors or one brushed motor and one accessory item such as a winch. In addition to dual-motor applications, the M2 Dig can now be used as a dual-purpose scale build speed control. Use one side to run the vehicle motor, and the 2nd side to operate the vehicles’ winch or other accessory device. No more pre-mixed operation or “dig” settings needed in this mode. Each channel is operated on its own input from the radio system. Setting up “tank style” vehicles, or using the radio mixing to setup multi-motor controls is easy, all in one package.

 Four Fully-Programmable Throttle Profiles

The compact M2 Dig ESC is easy to install and operate. There are four fully programmable throttle profiles:

•Dig Mode Uses Dig Power (independent of Drag Brake) to lock one motor at a time. This mode requires a proportional switch or a simple three-position switch to operate.

•Proportional Dig Mode. This completely original mode uses a transmitter’s third channel that is proportional (button or dial), allowing drivers to vary the amount of Dig Power being applied to the motor. This innovative feature provides seemingly endless fine tuning of the Dig for the ultimate vehicle control.

•Single Output Mode is for applications with single motors or operation without a 3-channel transmitter. In this mode all four motor power wires can be soldered to one brush motor for higher performance, or connect two motors and control them both at the same time.

•Dual Independent Mode is for applications that require independent control over two motors, or one motor and an accessory item such as a winch. The throttle trigger controls one motor, and the transmitter’s AUX/3rd channel controls the second motor or accessory item. All settings such as drag brake, dead band, and minimum drive equally apply to both motors. There is no dig function in this mode.

On-Board Adjustability

The M2 Dig not only gives racers four separate throttle profiles, but can also be easily adjusted via Novak’s reliable on-board setup. There are four PCB-mounted LEDs to aid in programming and two different colored external LED indicator lights, located at the ends of six inch harnesses that visibly display when a motor is locked and the vehicle is ready to dig.

The powerful speed control also comes equipped with instant reverse via Novak’s Zero Reverse Delay, which provides immediate power delivery in both forward and reverse directions.

No Modifications Needed

The M2 Dig 3S ESC does not require any vehicle modifications to install or operate. Simply plug it into any three-channel surface receiver, and you’re ready to crawl! This ESC is not only easy to install into a vehicle, but it possesses countless features on its own! Compared with a Dual ESC setup, the M2 allows racers to use top of the line crawling technology with just one speed control.

Novak Built & Supported

Novak takes pride in its manufacturing facility in Lake Forest, California and also with its use of high-quality components, assembly, and testing processes. Every Novak M2 Dig ESC is built and tested in the Novak factory to Novak’s exacting standards, are supported by Novak’s knowledgeable customer support staff and race team, and include Novak’s One-Year Product Warranty.

The M2 Dig 3S ESC is easily programmed into most three-channel transmitters, such as the Spektrum® DX3R DSM2 3CH Surface Radio™, Airtronics’® M8 and M11 R/C Radios™, and a Traxxas® (TQ-3) Transmitter™*

Features:

•Fully programmable, user-friendly interface with six adjustable parameters: Drag Brake (10 settings), Dig Power (10 settings), Dead Band (5 settings), Minimum Drive (10 settings), Drive Frequency (10 settings) and Voltage Cut-Off (3 settings – Off, Li-Po, Li-Fe)

•Four throttle profiles: Dig Mode, Proportional Dig Mode, Single Output Mode, and Dual-Independent Mode

•Independently powers the front or rear motors in a dual-motor applications such as scale/crawler vehicles, robotic, tank, and boat/submarine. One of the outputs can be used to control an accessory item such as a winch

•Operates on both 2S and 3S applications (an external BEC is required for 3S)

•Instant reverse via Novak’s Zero Reverse Delay providing immediate power delivery in both forward and reverse

•Internal high-voltage 5-Amp Linear BEC

•Universal JST Input Plug for Ch. 2 and Ch. 3, which fits all popular brand receivers

•Water-resistant case with a protective silicone gasket to help keep out the elements

•Thermal Overload Protection to protect ESC from damage due to overheating

•Included cooling fan

•Features a set of power output pins for running cooling fans, auxiliary lights, scale winches, etc.

•Meets RoHS compliance and includes a one-year warranty

•Designed, assembled, and tested by Team Novak in Lake Forest, California using the best components from around the globe. All ESCs are 100% tested to ensure your product works right out of the box!

Tamiya Brings Back the TA-02, Announces New TB-04R and F103GT Models

Remember the Tamiya TA-02 chassis? It was ground zero for the touring car mania that swept RC in the late nineties and early 2000s, and without it the sedan scene wouldn’t exist. Now it’s back in “SW” (Short Wheelbase) trim, specifically to fit Porsche 911GT2 bodywork with the correct scale proportions. The limited-edition release is joined by another short-run car, the TB-04R. Like all Tamiya R-types, it’s a full-option competition car. And finally, we have the Nissan GTR LM Nismo. Nissan’s wild front-engine, FWD Le Mans Prototype is faithfully captured in Lexan as only Tamiya can, and under the plastic you’ll find the direct-drive F103GT–basically an F1 car with rubber tires.

In addition to a shorter wheelbase, the TA-02SW gets deeply offset wheels to fill out those gorgeous flared flanks. This body was last seen in Tamiya’s lineup with Taisan Starcard livery. Chassis shot via rcgrabbag.com, it may differ in colors and details from what Tamiya offers. But you can count on that classic tub, Manta Ray-derived front and rear gearboxes, and the distinctive short-and-wide fiootprint.

Tamiya F103GT

Nissan GT-R LM Nismo Launch Version
Nissan’s convention-busting front-engine car is the most distinctively styled Le Mans Prototype on the track. Unlike the full-size car, Tamiya’s model is RWD and holds its motor next to the rear axle. The chassis shot is Tamiya’s standard F103GT image, the Nissan will include the wheels and tires shown in the body-on image.

PROTOform Introduces Cadillac ATS-V.R Body

PROTOform’s new Caddy is a great representation of the full-size car and comes molded out of .030 Lexan. This hot body is designed to fit a 190mm touring car chassis and it’s a sweet looking piece. Beyond scale appearance, the body is also designed to provide maximum performance and includes tuning options for various types of racing. I’m an off-road guy but after seeing this new PROTOform Cadillac ATS-V.R body I think I’m going to have to get my hands on a sedan just so I can mount one up.

Cadillac Racing stormed back into the motorsports spotlight in 2015 with their factory-works ATS-V.R race car, the third generation of V-Series race cars. Built to international FIA GT3 specifications, this pedigree allows it to potentially run in more than 30 different GT series around the world. The ATS-V.R has proven a success with top drivers Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim at the wheel, scoring multiple overall wins and pole positions in the World Challenge series.

FPV On The Track: Fly Along With The Action [VIDEO]

The first-person-view (FPV) scene is exploding, but most of the clips are landscapes and sky-high shots–yawn. We like this clip a lot more, as “josh fpv” gets right down into the action on an RC track.

World’s Smallest Nitro Powered RC Car? [Video]

Now here’s something you don’t see every day. This guy made the world’s smallest nitro powered RC car (he claims–ever seen one smaller?) and it sounds pretty mean. Bonus points for the old “upside down bicycle as starter box” trick. Check out the video.
