Axial Jeep Mighty FC Body

Axial’s latest body design will just be a weird-lookin’ body for some RC fans, but Jeepers will recognize the snub-nosed styling as a Forward-Control or “FC.” The classic utility platform got an official “concept” makeover back in 2012 as the “Mighty FC,” and that’s what Axial has modeled here. Definitely different! See below for full Axial hype

Be sure to check out our Hot News & New Stuff forum daily for the latest gear.

Axial Jeep Mighty FC Body

Axial Jeep Mighty FC Body

From Axial:

Back in 2012 the Jeep® brand design team crafted the Mighty FC Concept vehicle, spawned from its 1950’s linage and morphed into modern day off road swagger making grown men weak in the knees upon first glance. The “I must have but can’t” attitude behind the Mighty FC Concept is thanks to todays vehicles safety standards quickly making Forward Cab vehicles a thing of the past. Fortunately, scale realism is in, and Axial is proud to announce the Jeep® Mighty FC Concept body for purchase. Here’s a brief run down behind the Jeep® Mighty FC Concept Vehicle…

A few years back, 1956 – 1965 to be exact, the Jeep® brand created the Forward Control, which offered an ingenious solution to smaller yet capable utilitarian minded off-road vehicles. The overall length of the vehicle was kept to a minimum allowing for greater maneuverability while still maintaining a full sized cargo area for maximum utility. Just shy of a decade, production consisted of approximately 30,000 units that covered a wide gamut of configurations ranging from military, towing, civilian, hauling and farming applications. Engine choices ranged from a small 2.2L inline 4 cylinder know as the Hurricane F4-134, 3.7L inline 6 cylinder Super Hurricane and a 4.5L V8 Y-block. In present day FC’s are talked about but hardly seen due to their rarity and coveted ownership.

Knowing that background, fast-forward 47 years and give the Jeep® R&D team a crack at creating a one off concept vehicle that not only showcases the teams abilities, but also pays respect to an early classic. Deadline for the Mighty FC Concept, 46th Annual Moab Easter Jeep® Safari. Creating the Mighty FC Concept was done by taking a 2012 Wrangler Rubicon and repositioned the cabin ahead of the front axle, stretched the wheelbase and chassis, created a custom rear cargo box area along with using the roof from a Jeep® JK-8 conversion kit. Not to mention a bold custom leather interior coupled with Mopar® Front and Rear 8-lug Portal Axle kits. Parts surrounding the axles consisted of King coil-over shocks, 40” BFG tires and custom Hutchinson 17-inch beadlock wheels. Thus the Jeep® Mighty FC Concept was born and with it came a cult following like none other.

With the help of the Jeep® brand, Axial has created a stunning replica of the Jeep® Mighty FC Concept that’s scaled around 11.4” wheelbase SCX10 vehicles and compatible with the SCX10 Wheel Wells (AX31150). Wheelbase can easily shortened by using the SCX10 TR Links Set 11.4” (AX30549). Included with the body is a full decal sheet, easy to install LED light buckets, all necessary body hardware and window mask sheet. (LED lights sold separately)

Features:

•Offically licensed Jeep® Mighty FC Body

•Complete set of pre-cut decals

•Hardware included

•LED lights sold separately

From Vaterra:

The brainchild of the same visionaries behind the Mustang, the first generation Bronco featured a unique chassis engineered to drive boldly where the pavement ends. You’ll find that same spirit of off-road adventure in this licensed, 1/10-scale recreation of the ’72 Bronco. Its proven Ascender™ chassis features stamped-steel ladder frames, over 45° of steering travel and one of the most capable off-road suspensions available.

Heavy Duty Suspension

The chassis rides on a 3-link panhard bar front suspension and a 4-link rear suspension. All suspension links are machined from aluminum to handle the most punishing conditions. Oil-filled, threaded shocks soak up the bumps and give you a variety of pre-load settings.

Metal Gear Transmission

The single-speed, metal gear transmission is engineered for steep inclines and rugged, rocky terrain. Those seeking a broader range of speed and climb performance can upgrade to the optional two-speed transmission, sold separately.

Floating Battery Tray

The battery tray floats over the front axle and is designed to accept 96mm shorty packs. Placing the weight of the battery over the front axle gives the front tires extra traction when crawling over rocks and tackling steep inclines.

Crawler Style Front Bumper

Front bumper features molded tow hooks. An opening on the front bumper leaves plenty of room for a winch cable. If you want to try different 1/10-scale bodies later on, the bumper can be moved to accommodate most of them.

Heavy Duty CV Front Shafts

As with the rest of the drivetrain components, these have been designed to handle rugged terrain. They also allow up to 45 degrees of steering angle – more than most other trucks in this class.

Licensed 1972 Ford® Bronco Body

The painted, polycarbonate body is modeled after one of the most popular early editions of the Ford Bronco ever built. Scale touches include an injection-molded grille with headlight details and authentic Ford badging.

Sticky Compound Interco Super Swamper Tires

The realistic drivetrain and suspension are complemented by licensed replicas of Interco TSL SX Super Swamper® tires. Like the full-scale versions, their tread pattern and compound provide excellent grip at almost any angle.

Powerful Dynamite® Crawler Motor

The potent Dynamite motor delivers all the torque you need to muscle over rock piles and power through mud and brush.

Waterproof Electronics

The truck is equipped with a waterproof receiver, speed control and steering servo for driving in the real world, where things get wet and the weather is often less than perfect.

Spektrum™ DX2E 2.4GHz Radio System

The included radio system gives you the unbeatable signal security and responsiveness of Spektrum DSMR® 2.4GHz technology. The DX2E transmitter is compatible with any Spektrum surface receiver so you can use it with other RC vehicles as well.

Kyosho Reveals New TF7 Sedan

Kyosho’s TF7 is fully loaded and ready to race with features like Kyosho’s Velvet shocks, a gear rear differential, front spool and aluminum turnbuckles. We really like the red anodized aluminum parts on this sedan, it really stands out from the rest. Check out the long list of trick stuff that this sedan has to offer below.

For more pics, see our Hot News & New Stuff forum

Kyosho TF7 Competition Touring Car Kyosho TF7 Competition Touring Car Kyosho TF7 Competition Touring Car Kyosho TF7 Competition Touring Car

From Kyosho:

The new Kyosho TF7 Competition Touring Car is undoubtedly the most advanced and sophisticated design in Kyosho history, and may well be the most advanced car on the market. A combination of updates and innovative yet simple new design features, deliver a package that has world-class performance potential. No expense was spared with the TF7 – it uses parts and materials that are ideal for the application, making performance the number one priority over bean-counter budgets and marketing plans to ensure the highest amount of sales. Let there be no mistake – the TF7 is simply made for fierce competitors that insist on the highest standards of quality and performance.

CHASSIS

The most important feature of the new chassis is what’s not there. There’s no battery mount on the lower chassis, nor is there a servo mount. The battery pack and steering servo have been mounted directly to the chassis plate on most cars for decades, but in a “what took so long to think of that?” moment, Kyosho has suspended the battery pack and steering servo from bulkheads that are mounted on the car’s centerline. A closer look shows how the battery and servo are suspended just above the lower chassis plate, which accomplishes two major advantages. The battery and servo are separated from the main chassis plate, which resolves some issues with asymmetrical flexing of the chassis. In other words, mounting the battery and servo to the lower plate can cause the chassis to flex more in one direction, and not the other. With a similar motive in mind, the TF7’s battery and servo mounts are attached to the lower chassis exactly on the center-line. This allows the carbon fiber chassis plate to be completely symmetrical, which makes the chassis flex much more predictable, and therefore, the handling is more responsive and predictable.

The lower chassis plate is milled from 2.25mm carbon fiber, and the upper plate is 2.0mm milled carbon. As previously stated, the chassis is completely symmetrical, making it flex very consistently no matter where you are on the track. The carbon shock towers measure at a robust 3.5mm thickness, which provides a solid, durable mount for the updated shocks.

SUSPENSION

The shorter shocks feature the famous “Velvet” coating, but the shocks are not just about the coating. The precision of the manufacturing is at such a high level, that it combines with other features that have earned Kyosho a reputation for building the best shocks in the business. Machined aluminum AND molded spring perches are included with the TF7. The shocks are fitted to low-profile 3.5mm thick carbon shock towers, which lower the CG and cause the spring rate to build more rapidly, making it ideally suited to touring car racing. Extensive testing revealed that shortening the shocks by 2mm resulted in the best handling characteristics for both asphalt and carpet racing.

The suspension arms, C-hubs and steering knuckles are made using a special molding process that infuses molded composite with long fiber strands, into these components. This is in contrast to machined aluminum or machined plastic parts that are often found on other cars. The fiber filled molded composite parts have an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio as compared to machined plastic or aluminum parts. The machined plastic is easier to break, and the machined aluminum is often heavier, which increases unsprung weight. Only molded, fiber-filled components can offer so much strength without adding unsprung weight; a critical consideration to produce the ultimate in performance.

The suspension arms are attached to the chassis using a system similar to that which debuted on the TF5 touring car. Aluminum mounts use molded eccentric inserts to tailor the toe angle and suspension widths to your exact preferences. There’s an obscenely wide range of settings for this part of the suspension, so there’s no way to miss the set-up due to a limited range of adjustment. The suspension mounts themselves can also be shimmed to alter the dive/squat geometry.

 DRIVETRAIN

The belt drive of the TF7 doesn’t look much different from a distance, but the details prove otherwise. A super-precise Panaracer 64P spur gear delivers power to the machined aluminum, Velvet coated drive pulleys. These pulleys are larger diameter so more teeth on the belt are engaged with the pulleys. This reduces wear and improves efficiency.

The TF7 does not include conventional ball differentials. The rear of the TF7 features a precision, lightweight gear differential. These have become standard with the increase in the power output of brushless racing motors. The diff housing features an O-ring seal, and two O-rings sealing each outdrive. The rear drive system includes lightweight aluminum outdrives and aluminum driveshafts with “pucks” that fit over the dogbone end of the driveshaft and allow it to smoothly move within the slotted outdrive.

At the front end of the TF7 is a “rigid axle.” The rigid axle provides the most solid, instant acceleration of any other option, and it delivers exceptional braking power when compared to a front ball differential or a one-way diff and/or belt drive. The rigid axle then transmits the power to the durable “double-jointed” steel front axles, which provide excellent tight turning ability, and exceptional reliability.

Eccentric inserts affix the diffs into the bulkheads, and they allow the static driveshaft angle to be adjusted for more or less suspension movement under acceleration and braking.

Required for Operation: brushless electric motor, electronic speed control (ESC), rechargeable racing battery of your choice, a compatible battery charger, 2-channel radio system, steering servo, 190mm sedan body, touring car wheels and tires.

 FEATURES:

•Advanced symmetrical flex design for reliable predictable handing.

•Suspended battery mount is attached on the centerline of the chassis.

•A suspended servo mount enhances handling as well.

Tekno Announces The ET48.3

Tekno has been on a roll lately and has been releasing a bunch of new vehicles. The latest is the ET48.3 which is an electric specific competition truggy. The ET48.3 has a very narrow chassis which does a good job of keeping all of the running gear as close to the truck’s centerline as possible. It also has features such as a low profile wing mount, trailing front spindles, aluminum front center drive shaft and aluminum motor mount. We really like the look of this unique truggy and can’t wait to see what it does on the track.Since the release of the original ET48 in December of 2013, we have been continually improving our products. Over the years we have tested hundreds of parts, released dozens of meaningful options, and we have improved the overall setup of the ET48. The original ET48 was a huge improvement on the truggy platform in general and has enjoyed incredible success around the world. Now it’s time to introduce the ET48.3 – the new standard in the 1/8th Electric Truggy class.

From Tekno:

New rear hubs (TKR5199) allow the option of using the stock CV axles or upcoming universal driveshafts. We now also offer the rear hubs in aluminum as an option (TKR5199A). At the front of the vehicle are new trailing steering spindles (TKR5193) and spindle carriers (TKR5194). The trailing components vastly improve high speed bump handling in addition to smoothing out the steering response. The vehicle initiates turns more predictably and finishes corners better than ever before. Larger bearings are now fitted to the front spindles for improved durability. The spindles will also accommodate the upcoming universal driveshafts.

The V2 hinge pin braces (TKR5161, TKR5162, TKR5163, TKR5164, TKR5165) have found their way into the new kit. They provide more adjustability than ever before. For example, changing the roll centers at the hinge pin is now an easy task and allows you to set up the vehicle for any conditions. Front arm sweep, kick-up, rear anti-squat, and rear toe are all adjustable.

Our low profile wing mount (TKR5181) is included to lower the CG of the whole vehicle. A revised front bumper (TKR5166) increases front ground clearance. Straight camber link rod ends (TKR5187) were produced to improve consistency in corners. Maintenance is easier with the addition of the split center differential mount (TKR5260, TKR5263). Clamping spring perches (TKR6140) and new shock boots (TKR6144, TKR6145) are also included to keep the shocks clean, smooth, and trouble free.

Finally, the box setup has been tuned by some of the best drivers in the world to give our customers a vehicle that they can confidently drive in most conditions. A lowered stance, enlarged front splitter, signature silver “Flow-tie” grill emblem and integrated decklid spoiler enhance the aerodynamic performance and aesthetic style.

The Z/28® includes add-on rear wing with two trim lines, injection molded struts and a race-inspired decal sheet. The Z/28® is produced in genuine, durable .030” Lexan® and comes with protective overspray film, window masks, decal sheet and hardware to mount the struts and wing.

Please note: All bodies are sold in crystal clear lexan® and are painted for advertising purposes only.

Kev’s Bench: 32 Ford And Old School Monster Truck Update

    Kev

I found a little time to get some work done on a few of my current projects and I wanted to share some of the progress with you guys. Let’s take a quick look at my 32 Ford pickup inspired SCX10 and old school monster truck.

    32 Ford Pickup

After some recent trail riding with some of my other rigs I decided to shift gears and get back on my 32 Ford pickup inspired build. I had put some of the truck together so that I could use the axles, chassis and suspension to figure out what size I needed to make the body. With the body in motion I decided to pull what I built apart so I could install the final components and add a few more while I was at it.

    Axial SCX10 Savox

The axles are now fitted with Axial’s aluminum hubs, hub carriers and rear lockouts along with Axial heavy duty ring and pinion gears and universal drive shafts. Axial’s aluminum steering links help get the torque of the Savox waterproof servo to the wheels with no flex. The stainless steel hardware from RC Screwz really puts them over the top.

    Axial SCX10 Novak Robinson Racing

The transmission in my SCX10 has been outfitted with Axial’s heavy duty gear set and aluminum motor plate. The metal spur gear and heavy duty slipper pad is from Robinson Racing. Power for this truck is going to come from a Novak Rockstar brushed motor. The input shaft is running very close to the back of the body so I’m going to grind away at the shaft slightly to give me more room and I’ll be designing a compact gear cover and making it on my Zeus 3D printer.

Axial SCX10 Pro-Line Savox Novak Hot Racing

The chassis is back together and looking good. I have to add some stainless screws to the transmission housing to wrap that up and then it’s time for some modifications. The battery will be mounted up front but as low as possible then I’m going to work on a low CG speed control mount for my Novak M2 Dig and figuring out how to install my Traxxas waterproof receiver box. The car stands are from Hot Racing and I love how they add to the scale look of the truck.

    Axial SCX10 RC4WD

My truck is going to have to light up the night so mounted up a LED lightbar from RC4WD. The shape of the bar goes well with the square shape of my custom cab and it’s sure to light up the way.

    Axial SCX10 Pro-Line RC4WD

I also made some progress on the cab. I cut out my side and front windows and have started fitting the cab to the chassis. I need to round the edges of the windows and finish it up by cutting out the rear window. Body mounts need to be figured out before I can finish fitting the body to the chassis. I also need to start cutting the gaps for the doors and hood, designing and making the door handles, cut out and detail the grill and a few other things before I can start filling gaps and getting the cab ready for some paint.

    Old School Monster Truck

Progress has been slow on my old school monster truck but I have found some time to work on the body a little and up the scale coolness a bit.

    Tamiya Clod Buster

The back of the cab received some filler to smooth out the transition between the back of the cab and the pockets that I made. I was going to make a special tool to spread the filler but that didn’t work out so well. My finger ended up being the spreader and I am hoping that some sanding and a few more coats will give the back of the cab the look that I am going for. While I was at it I filled in the sunroof to smooth the roof out a bit.

    RC4WD Zeus 3D Printer

Now that my 3D printer is up and running I’ve been working on designing and making some cool scale accessories for my truck. The first one was a battery that looks like what the trucks in the 80s would have had and now I am in the process of making an intake, blower and so on for the top section of my RC4WD aluminum engine. The intake is a test print that I did to make sure that the fit was correct on the block. Now I can move forward with a blower, carbs, scoop and the rest of the parts to give my V8 engine that blown look.

    From HPI:

The Savage XS Flux packs in everything you know and love about the neck snapping, standing backflip-capable Savage Flux! A ridiculously powerful Flux brushless powerplant to provide you with the most menacing speed runs, legendary Savage durability that passes the bashing exam with flying colors, innovative TVP technology for a class leading design, and extreme monster truck appearance and ground clearance to conquer it all.

The compact Savage XS Flux is just 2/3 the size of a standard Savage, so it’s the perfect size for backyard tracks and smaller areas. The Savage XS Flux is built tough with an all-metal drivetrain so it can handle giant jumps and speeds over 65mph! The 4WD system provides excellent traction on any off-road or on-road surface you can throw at it. And it’s all built with legendary Savage toughness so you spend more time driving and less time wrenching.

The Savage XS Flux is ready to go right out of the box, including a 2.4GHz radio system and 3S-capable Flux brushless system. Just add your favorite 2S Li-Po battery pack like the HPI #101941 or #101942 Plazma 7.4V batteries and start driving!

    Featuring the Ford SVT Raptor!

Savage monster truck fans will love the addition of this fabulous new body choice to go onto the world’s fastest mini-monster truck! The Ford SVT Raptor is the high performance off-road version of the Ford F-150, the most popular full-size truck in the United States with over 16 million F-150 trucks sold since its introduction in 1948.The full-size SVT Raptor is a dedicated off-road truck, and we’ve replicated every unique feature of this performance-bred vehicle. This scaled-down version has the same grille design, engine vents, fender flares, short bed and even the ‘digital mud’ graphics of the full-size truck!

    Easy to Drive!

The Savage XS Flux is super-easy to drive and get familiar with – to drive the truck, simply pick up the controller with your left hand, put your left index finger into the trigger area, and then put your right hand on the steering wheel – it’s as natural as driving a real car! Turn the wheel to go left and right and gently pull on the trigger with your left index finger to go forwards. To brake the truck and come to a stop, gently push away from you with your left index finger. It takes just seconds to get used to driving an RC car, and soon you’ll be doing speed runs, power drifts and huge jumps with ease!

    Waterproof Protection

The Savage XS Flux features waterproof protection for its electronics and it’s ready to tackle wet conditions like rain and snow! The 2.4GHz receiver is safely stored in a waterproof receiver box, protecting it from the elements and ensuring glitch-free operation. The waterproof SF-10W steering servo and waterproof EMH-3S electronic speed controller complete the package, allowing you to enjoy the action on the road no matter what the weather is like! Please note: the electronics are not designed for submerged operation. Be sure to rinse off any dirt or salt water with clean water immediately after driving. Check the receiver box to make sure no water is inside and let dry fully before driving again.

    Tough “Savage style” TVP Chassis

The chassis for the Savage XS Flux is very similar to the nitro-powered Savage that we all know and love – the backbone consists of the TVP (Twin Vertical Plate) design, formed from two 5mm chassis plates, with the diff cases at either end providing significant stiffness and the transmission casing and motor plate forming load-bearing members of the structure.

    LiPo Battery Power

The Savage XS Flux is designed to use 2S or 3S LiPo packs. The battery box features vents to keep the battery pack cool, and we suggest using an official Deans® zero-loss battery plug to match the plug on the ESC. Out of the box, the Savage XS Flux is optimized for 2S Lipo Power. 2S gives the best balance of handling and performance. Standing backflips? No problem! But if you want to go for crazy top speed or simply brutal power upgrade to 3S LiPo batteries like the #106401 Plazma 11.1V 3200mAh! However, be aware with that much power you’ve got to know what you are doing! Depending on what you want to do and where you want to run the car you will have to adjust the gear ratio. Option parts #105809 & #6924 are required for 3S running in most situations like going off-road or doing stunt driving.

    All-metal Transmission Gears

The Savage XS Flux features all-metal transmission gears to make sure that power delivery is uninterrupted and every jolt of power gets from the motor to the tires efficiently and with no worry of damage to the gears. The whole drivetrain runs on ball bearings for optimal efficiency, extra-long runtimes and mega-fast top speeds!

    Ultra Tough Over-sized Suspension

The over-sized suspension design makes the Savage XS extremely tough and capable of handling even the wildest bashing action. Aluminum 12mm hex hubs allow the mounting of almost all standard 1/10th scale wheels.

    Silicone Filled Threaded Shocks

Four threaded shocks give the suspension action you need to get out and blast through the roughest of tracks or off-road terrain. Filled with silicone oil, the slick nylon bodies are lightweight and strong, with almost no ‘stiction’ between the shock piston and shock body for smooth and consistent damping.

    All-Terrain Tires, 1/10th compatible

With the aggressive tread of the 2.2″ GT2 tires, you can go off-road to on-road with predictable handling. The center tread lines give you stability on paved surfaces while the blocky tread pattern and heavy-duty sidewall teeth provide grip for off-road terrain like dirt, mud, muck, leaves. They’re mounted on black chrome 2.2″ Warlock wheels for tough monster truck styling. For maximum hop-up potential, the Savage XS Flux accepts a wide variety of 1/10th scale 2.2″ wheels and tires, making customizing your truck easy.

    Flux MMH-4000 Motor

The Flux MMH-4000 motor delivers massive power – plenty of juice for instant wheelies and standing backflips! Option pinion gears are available to fine-tune the speed and torque delivery! The brushless design assures maximum performance with nearly no maintenance required.

    Flux EMH-3S ESC

With the capacity to handle 2S and 3S LiPo power, the Flux EMH-3S electronic speed control can take anything you can possibly throw at it and keep coming back for more! The EMH-3S features an integrated cooling fan to keep it cool in tough conditions. The Flux EMH-3S ESC is reversible so you can back out of jams with ease. And for maximum adjustability it’s fully programmable with our optional #101856 Flux Reload ESC Program Box V2.

Mike MacKenzie’s Awesome Metal Mulisha Replica [Reader’s Ride]

This sweet monster truck was sent to us by Mike MacKenzie from Westboro, MA. He said that it started life as an HPI Wheely King and with many modifications it has been turned into the Monster Jam World Finals champ Metal Mulisha. The body was painted by Terry Plum of The Monster Factory and looks just like the body on the real deal. Mike tells use that the only thing left from the Wheely King is basically the transmission and axle housings. A Castle 5700Kv motor and Mamba Max Pro get things running and giving it that awesome monster truck look are rims from RC4WD, Destroyer tires from Pro-Line and a Pro-Line Ford body. Mike tells us that this truck also has a Sence Hobby ESS-ONE sound system, toggled 4WS and a lot more. Thanks for sharing this awesome truck Mike!

Kev’s Bench: Building A Modern Day Monster Mack

    Kev

As a kid I used to read ever issue of Radio Control Car Action from cover to cover the second it showed up in the mail box. I was often inspired by many of the project and race vehicles shown in those pages. On the September 1991 cover was a truck unlike anything I ever saw before and it was called the Monster Mack. It was a custom 6×6 Tamiya Clod Buster with a hand built chassis and a metal Mack truck cab and custom made flatbed. I couldn’t stop staring at the pics of this truck and was determined to build one of my own. I actually built a truck but it wasn’t half as cool as the Monster Mack. Over the years I have spent time gathering parts here and there and I am ready to build a modern day version of that awesome truck. Here’s what I have going on so far.

    Tamiya Clod Buster

    Tamiya Clod Buster

Jon Freed’s Monster Mack is just awesome. It was the first time we saw a 6x6x6 Clod Buster and it had a custom built aluminum chassis. The tilt bed was done with a spring and winch that was disguised to look like a hydraulic ram. A single servo was connected to three mechanical speed controls and that’s what was used to run all three motors. Only the front tires turned on this truck and that was done with a  single ¼-scale servo.

Tamiya Bull Head Tamiya Bull Head

This was my first attempt at 6×6 truck. I use a Tamiya Bullhead as the base of the project and bolted on an aluminum rear section that allowed me to bolt on the third gearbox. The bed was made using balsa wood and aluminum. Parma’s Chevy small block engine added some detail and the hood was controlled by a servo. It wasn’t as cool as the Monster Mack but not too bad for a 14 year old kid.

    Tamiya Clod Buster

The base for my project is a Sassy Chassis 6×6 aluminum chassis. It’s wheelbase between the front and rear wheels is a little longer than what was used on the Monster Mack. This chassis let’s you adjust the height of the truck and that’s done through the shock mount holes and by moving the suspension link mount up or down.

    Pro-Line PowerStroke Shocks

With a truck like this you need a lot of shocks. I had planned on using stock Tamiya Super Clod Buster shocks but once I had them in place I knew I had to step it up and go big. I replaced all the shocks with 12 Pro-Line PowerStroke shocks. These are great performing shocks but with this project it’s not about performance, it’s more about looking good.

    Tamiya Clod Buster

I don’t want this truck to be a speed demon so I stuck with stock Tamiya motors to power the gearboxes.

    Pro-Line Destroyer tires

I gathered six Tamiya Super Clod tires for this project but the second Pro-Line introduced the Destroyer tires I knew I had to switch things up. They are now wrapped around my Super Clod wheels.

    Buddy L Mack Truck

    Buddy L Mack Truck

In the article about the Monster Mack it says that Jon used a Tonka Truck body on top of the chassis. I really loved the look of that Mack body and wanted that for my project but the body used was not a Tonka body and it took me a while to figure out what was actually used. It’s a metal body from a Buddy L Mack dump truck and I was able to find one on EBay. Bodies in good condition were going for way more money than I wanted to spend so I bought a badly rusted body so I can use it for the dimensions then I can use what I find to make my own body out of plastic and improve on the look of the truck at the same time. I coated the parts with black paint to keep the rust from falling off and making a mess everywhere it goes.

Well, that’s it so far. I still have to figure out what to do for a bed and what I’m going to use for the servos and speed control. The hardest part will be trying to figure out what to do behind the cab. Do you guys have any suggestions? Email me at kevinh@airage.com and let me know what you want to see.

A Clutch for Electric Cars? TLR Has Them For The 8IGHT-Es

Clutches (as in the kind that go on an engine, not a slipper clutch) are required for nitro cars, since there has to be a way for the crankshaft to rotate as the engine idles while the car is stopped. Electric motors simply stop with the car, so there’s no need for a clutch–but a clutch can still be useful. In some situations, the instant power of an 1/8-scale brushless system can be overwhelming, making it hard to maintain control and increasing load on drivetrain components. TLR now offers a 4-shoe clutch to smooth everything out for increased performance and durability. TLR’s new clutch system is available for the 8IGHT-E 2.0, 8IGHT-E 3.0 and 8IGHT-E T 3.0. Full info in the official press release from TLR below.

    Losi TLR electric clutch

    From TLR:

The 8IGHT-E Clutch system provides instant power while increasing traction and decreasing the load on the drive-train. The slip system of the clutch allows improved throttle modulation on bumpy tracks as it will slip under a heavy or abrupt load allowing the vehicle to remain stable. The clutch system also allows for full brake usage without the need for mechanical brakes due to the preloaded clutch shoes. The 8IGHT-E clutch system is a direct fit on the 8IGHT-E 2.0, 8IGHT-E 3.0 and 8IGHT-E T 3.0.

    Features:

    • Converts electric 1/8-scale buggies and trucks to a nitro-style clutch system
    • Provides smoother throttle response, especially on bumpy tracks
    • Direct fit on the 8IGHT-E 2.0, 8IGHT-E 3.0 and 8IGHT-E T 3.0

    Needed to Complete:

    • Clutch Bells

    HobbyKing introduces Basher SaberTooth Truggy

This new truggy from Hobby King comes in RTR form and it’s powered by a large .28 nitro burning engine. Hobby King also fitted this truck with a large 400cc fuel tank for long run times between fill ups. You can learn more by checking out the press release from Hobby King below.

    Hobby King Truggy

    From HobbyKing:

There’s nothing like the sound, the smell and the feel of nitro to get your blood pumping. If you liked the original you will love the nitro version of this favourite all-rounder. No matter if you’re a basher or an ocassional racer the tough chassis and tuneable suspension coupled with a super powerful .28 engine will keep supplying the fun until the fuel runs out.

This great value nitro truggy pumps the awesome power of its .28 engine through all four wheels via sealed gear diffs* and a tough drivetrain just like the original electric version; it also carries over the same stiff alloy chassis and suspension geometry. Straight out of the box the truggy handles well; it corners hard, has plenty of grip and is extremely responsive in the air.

The Basher SaberTooth 1/8 Scale Nitro Truggy (RTR) just needs fuel, a glow igniter and a narrow blade long shaft screwdriver to get started. The .28 nitro engine is incredibly easy to get started and will be broken in after a couple of tanks of slow driving. The included 400CC fuel tank is a great design and gives you plenty of time to get to your car if it flips upside down, unlike some that stop working seconds after a you land on your lid.

The SaberTooth Nitro also shares a lot of parts from the original SaberTooth and all the spares for both versions can be found here.

If you’ve always run electric cars and you want to try nitro or you already have the passion for fuel and want a new all-rounder then this is the perfect car for you.

    Features:

    • Ready to run
    • Hand pull powerful .28 nitro engine
    • Parts are compatible with electric version
    • Metal gear 15KG steering and throttle servo
    • 400cc big fuel tank
    • 3 diff. shaft drive 4WD
    • Alloy main chassis
    • Alu. exhaust system
    • Fully adjustable wheel and suspension geometry
    • Comes with HK-GT2E radio

    Specs:

    Height: 215mm
    Length: 570mm

Tekin Releases Redline GEN3 1:10 Brushless Motors

The guys at Tekin teased us a bit at the ROAR Electric Off-Road Nationals and gave us a quick glimps of their new motor and now it’s heading to hobby shop shelves. With features like a machined aluminum can, anodized end bell, dual-plug sensor wire harness and high RPM precision bearings you can’t go wrong. Look below for more information on Tekin’s new Redline GEN3 brushless motor.

    From Tekin:

Tekin’s third generation motors are re-engineered from the ground up resulting in a smaller, lighter and faster sensored motor. On Road or Off, the new GEN3 handles the task in stride, delivering the smooth power across all RPMs that you’ve come to expect from a Tekin motor. Much more than a re-hash and new look, the GEN3 Redline Sensored Motor is now ready for any situation and able to create the speed you need to win.

The GEN3 21.5T, 17.5T and 13.5T are available in an RPM version as well as the standard versions. Designed for applications where higher RPM is more beneficial than torque, these motors are perfect for 1/12 and touring car racing classes.

The GEN3 modified group of motors are custom tuned with rotor sizes to give you the performance needed for your application. The 21.5T down to 8.5T group come standard with 12.5mm performance rotors and the 7.5T to 2.5T group are equipped with a 13mm rotor for that extra torque needed in modified racing.

Throwback Thursday: Twin Brushless Clod from May 2008

I’ve been building modified Tamiya Clod Busters for years and this Novak-powered project from the May 2008 issue is one of my favorites. Back in 2008, brushless power was just starting to take over and getting two power systems to work itogether was a little tricky. I just loved the look of this truck when it was finished; all that aluminum, those tires and body really made this one good looking machine. I wish Pro-Line still sold that body. Maybe they’ll see this and pull the mold off the shelf…

Kev’s Bench: Watch This 1/16 Scale Nitro Truck Pull 825 Pounds [VIDEO]

    Kev

RC truck pulling has some of the coolest trucks around and many of them are capable of pulling weights that are almost too heavy to believe. While doing some research for the pulling truck that I eventually want to build I stumbled across the NMMTPA which stands for the National Micro-Mini Tractor Pulling Association. These vehicles are 1/16-scale and use parts from RC cars but aren’t controlled by a radio or servos, which sort of makes them the slot cars of the pulling world. Here’s how the scene is described at the NMMTPA site:

The NMMTPA was founded in 1976 and is the main sanctioning body of Micro-Mini Tractor Pulling in the United States and Canada. Micro-Mini Tractors and Trucks originate from an ERTL type tractor or Tonka type trucks which are then fitted with a model airplane or car engine, driveline, and special pulling tires. A weight transfer sled is pulled by these small “toy” pullers on a 2′x16′ wooden track which is either covered with a formica surface or sealed with a smooth surface of polyurethane. Some of these pulling units in the 6 lb. open modified tractor class have been known to pull in excess of 600 lbs. There are currently seven sanctioned NMMTPA classes. They are: 3lb.Pro Stock Tractor, 5lb. Pro Stock Tractor, 2WD Road Vehicles, 5lb. Super Stock Tractors, 4×4 Trucks, and 6lb.Open Modified Tractors and optional 7lb Semi.

Check these little suckers out, they’re pretty wild! (Photos courtesy NMMTPA)

    micro puller 2 (Custom)

Yep, they run the trucks on a slick table top. It takes two hands to make a pull; one hand works the cable-operated throttle, the other moves the clear plastic guide to keep the truck from running off the table.

    micro puller 1 (Custom)

The trucks and tractors are custom-built and 1/16 scale.

    micro puller 3 (Custom)

Check out those tires, they’re very different from what we are used to seeing on the RC side of pulling. For table-top pulling, solid rubber tires are the way to go.

    micro puller 4 (Custom)

These guys go crazy with multi-engine machines. This 2WD puller has a pair of .21 mills, note the yellow throttle cable.

    micro puller 5 (Custom)

A weight transfer sled is used to challenge the pullers. Look how beefy that thing is.

Here’s a video of a truck in action. No tuned pipes here; open exhausts are king at these events. Look at the stack of weights behind that sucker.
