Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/4 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck [VIDEO]

Kev

What would you do if you got your hands on a fully operational 1/4 scale Conley V8 engine? Most would mount it on a nice piece of stained wood and put it on their desk, and a few of those people would actually fire it up from time to time to show it off to their friends. Virginia native Kevin Holmlund has a Conley engine and has decided to go the extra mile by building a 1/4-scale replica of the Grave Digger monster truck around it. He didn’t go to  the hobby shop to buy the parts for this truck; instead he designed and made everything you see here. This is one awesome piece of machinery!

Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/5 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck

Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/5 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck

How do you like that scale Grave Digger body? Kevin made the body by making a very large buck and his own custom vacuum forming machine; it takes two guys to make it happen. After only a few tries the body was finished.

Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/5 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck

That’s not a scale engine used to hide an electric motor; this one actually runs and powers the 1/4-scale Grave Digger. This is the Conley Stinger 609 and this engine features dual carburetors, zoomie headers, spark plugs and electric start. The base engine will set you back $8,258 and the price goes up from there when you start to add the option parts.

Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/5 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck

Where do you get 1/4-scale monster truck tires? You make them yourself. Kevin spent countless hours making these awesome treads which start life as a standard garden tractor tire. Kevin shaved all the treads off and glued on rubber strips to make the terra type tread that you see here. Yep, that valve stem is for filling the tire with air.

Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/5 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck

The rear axle is completely custom made. A set of bevel gears and a spool get the rear tires moving while a hydraulic brake system slows them down. There’s a lot of weight in the tires and axle so limiting straps are used to keep that weight off the shocks when the suspension is fully extended.

Kevin Holmlund’s Incredible Conley V8-Powered 1/5 Scale Grave Digger Monster Truck

Here’s the man himself next to his awesome creation. It takes a lot of passion and serious time to make a truck like this happen.

This build first appeared in our Spring issue of Radio Control Monster Trucks, which you can purchase here. We are working on the next issue of Monster Trucks for you right now and it will be on the newsstands soon!

Basher Hits The Road With The M.Rage

Basher’s heading into new territory with the M.Rage, the brand’s first on-road effort. Surprisingly, the car isn’t standard sedan-size, as in 190mm wide with a 255(ish)mm wheelbase. Instead, the M.Rage is scaled like Tamiya’s “M-chassis” cars, with a 210mm wheelbase at 165mm wide. Actual scale size depends what body is on the car. It’s technically 1/10 scale with its included Suzuki Swift body, but most of us would call the chassis “1/12 scale.” As for specs, the car is nicely equipped as Bashers usually are, and it’s got a low price–just a tick over $100. Aluminum shocks, full graphite, and shaft-driven 4WD with ball diffs are all standard stuff, full specs and Basher hype below.

From HobbyKing:

The Basher BSR Racing M.RAGE 1/10 4WD M-chassis (Un-assemble kit) 210mm long, almost touching the ground, with just the right balance of stiffness and flexibility and a body that is sure to make you relive your boy racer days, when every road was your own personal race track in your Suzuki Swift, Ford Escort or Mini Cooper (depending when you were born) and the thrill of a well balanced car was more important than all out speed. Those days when you’d spend hours building a 1/24th scale replica of your little pride and joy in the garage.

The M.Rage is not only the first true on-road racing kit to be launched by Basher’s BSR Racing brand but, we have finally come out with something that our car customers have been constantly asking us for… a build it yourself kit, so you can enjoy the experience of bringing your car to life, right down to painting its neat little Suzuki Swift body.

If you’re a racer or serious basher you’ll love the tough carbon fibre chassis, carbon reinforced plastics for the swing arms and gearboxes, ball diffs front and rear, silky smooth aluminium shocks and a range of option parts to keep even the most competitive drivers happy.

Because this car is so small, light and nimble you don’t need a super fast brushless system to have fun, in fact we set it up with an old school 27T brushed motor for the video shoot and it was more than enough power to whip around an on-road track.

This is a genuine race car just in a smaller package than normal. So relive those halcyon days of building your own models and tearing up the streets with your hot hatch and get yourself the M.Rage from BSR.

This RC Lego F1 Build Will Blow Your Mind [VIDEO]

Hat tip to Jalopnik for turning us on to this awesome Lego Ferrari 248 F1 car. It’s a custom job by prolific builder “Sariel,” not an off the shelf kit, which makes it even more impressive. Better yet, it’s radio control! In addition to the usual throttle and steering capabilities, the car features a shift-on-the-fly transmission, articulated wing, and working brake light. It sure beats the kind of Lego cars we built back in the day.

JConcepts Ruptures tires

JConcepts Ruptures tires

From JConcepts

The super soft green compound grips like a monster, while the tall (151mm) profile JConcepts tire for 2.2” wheels tackles even the most treacherous terrain. Perfect for vehicles like the Axial Yeti, the Ruptures are an extremely tacky yet versatile tire crawling and rock racing drivers lust for. The design starts with a layout of individual “large islands” that react to directional and forward loading characteristics like a soft gummy candy. The long horizontal attack bars are connected with solid sidewall detail which braces the sidewall for the high impact situations. The center “mini islands” help maintain spinning speed and at half height provide some space to sling clean during those dirtier runs.

The entire top level of tread has built-in cuts and recesses which provide a sharp edge. A sidewall radial rib connected with a dual position arrow help maintain stability and help the driver squeak out of a tough situation. The carcass itself is extremely pliable which conforms to the vast majority of obstacles. Inside the carcass, JConcepts features a connected “Y” loop ribbing design which blends carefully into the sidewall. The bracing supports the lower half of the tire while maintaining the upper flex characteristics.

The tires include a soft open cell foam insert capable of standing up the super soft compound but flexible enough for sharp terrain. Race a path to JConcepts for that all important traction, consistency and all out performance from the company known for World Proven Innovation and Design.

 · Aggressive pattern and design

 · 151mm | 5.94” overall size without insert

 · Super Soft, Green compound

 · Large and Mini island directional tread

 · Horizontal attack bars

Castle Creations Releases New Monster X Speed Control

The Monster  X is the latest in the Monster line from Castle Creations and it’s designed to operate big power vehicles such as 1/8-scale buggies and truggies, on-road cars and monster trucks. The Monster X speed control is packed full of features such as the ability to adjust one of many settings from an aux channel on your radio and it’s telemetry ready for those who are using a Futaba 4PX radio. Other features include data logging, an improved BEC and it can operate sensored motors. You can buy the speed control by itself or with one of Castle’s 2200Kv or 2650Kv brushless motors in a combo. I have the 2200Kv combo on the way and will have a full write up as soon as it’s installed.

For more new products be sure to check out our Hot News and New Stuff forum, updated daily!

Castle Creations Monster X speed control

From Castle:

Meet the Next Monster.

First, there was the Monster. Then the Monster 2. Now there’s the Monster X.

As revolutionary as it’s predecessors, the new Monster X Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) takes Castle’s legendary “monster” performance to a whole new level. The waterproof* Monster X is capable of 2S LiPo up to a maximum of 6S LiPo and is the legendary “power up” for 1/8th scale buggies, truggies and on-road vehicles as well as 1/10th scale monster trucks and R/C monstrosities weighing up to 15 lbs.

Extreme Power • Extreme Control • Extreme Fun!

The new Monster X provides even more extreme performance than the Monster 2. Most notable is the addition of a new, programmable Auxiliary Wire that allows users to make “on-the-go” adjustments to several settings, such as torque control and max throttle. The new Auxiliary Wire allows users to fine-tune the performance of their Monster X ESC right from the transmitter using an auxiliary channel on the receiver. The AUX wire function is disabled by default but is programmable via Castle Link. Once the user has programmed the functionality of the AUX wire, that setting can then be adjusted on-the-go from a compatible transmitter. The Monster X also features updated Audible Alerts that will notify drivers of possible issues with their calibrations and error conditions to help diagnose problems in the field.

Sensored Motor Capable

The new Monster X can also be configured to run sensored brushless motors with the purchase of an optional Sensor Harness from Castle Creations. This sensored-motor capability opens up a whole new segment of R/C enthusiasts who will now get to experience (or see the rooster tails) from a Castle Monster X-equipped racer, rock racer or rock crawler. One of our Monster X Beta testers summed up his experience, saying “Another race weekend in the books. Once again, in sensored mode, the ESC (Monster X) performed flawlessly. Great power and smooth transition from sensored to non-sensored.”

Extreme Power

The new Monster X is capable of running from 2S to a maximum of 6S LiPo power, but now features an improved heavy-duty adjustable Battery Eliminator Circuit (BEC) to provide plenty of power for today’s power hungry servos. The Monster X BEC voltage is adjustable from 5.5V, 6.0V, 7.5V and 8.0V while output is rated at 4.5 AMP continuous and 8 AMP peak. The Monster X also comes standard with a highly efficient, 30mm ESC cooling fan.

Monster X Data Logging

Also new to the Monster X is the ability to capture and record performance data from your last couple of runs, commonly referred to as data logging. This data can be downloaded via the upcoming Castle Quick Connect Duo (sold separately) that allows the user access to both wires into the single Castle Link connection. The user can then analyze this data and make adjustments to the ESC to maximize both performance and battery life.

Telemetry Ready (Futaba T4PX Transmitters only)

The new Monster X is telemetry ready, which means owners of Futaba T4PX Transmitters will be able to purchase the Castle Creations S.BUS Telemetry Link when it is released (available late July 2015). Real-time data such as ESC temperature, voltages and RPM can be monitored to ensure performance advantages and spare you the “unknown” parameters that all R/C enthusiasts experience at some point. Telemetry data provides another level of protection, can increase your “tuning awareness” and in turn, let you have more time doing what you love to do – burn rubber and throw dirt!

Extreme ESC and Extreme Combos

They can corrode when exposed to corrosive materials, such as salt water. Always rinse the ESC and motor with clean water after exposure to corrosives or dirt. While the motor and controller may be waterproof, we suggest users confirm that the rest of their vehicle, including the batteries, servos, radio and chassis are also waterproof before exposing them to liquids of any kind.

Weight (w/o battery connector soldered to ESC):

Application Guidelines:  The ESC and motor are intended for up to 6S (25.2 Volt) operation. Incredible in monster trucks with up to 6S LiPo packs (4S LiPo is the sweet spot), and works great in 1/8th buggies and truggies and on road as well. (vehicle weight limit is 15 lbs or less, with batteries ready-to-run).

Tech Notes: The Castle 1515-2200Kv motor is 75mm long making it capable of handling more power and heavier vehicles than the Castle 1512-2650 motor.

**The cooling fan must be removed prior to driving in wet conditions. It is not waterproof.

Application Guidelines:  Intended for up to 6S (25.2 Volt) operation in vehicles weighing less than 15 lbs, with batteries, ready-to-run.

Tech Notes: Not all LiPos are created equal, and surge ratings should never be used to determine a pack’s suitability for a brushless application. Use the CONTINUOUS C rating only. Mamba Monster setups frequently hit 100+ amps in peaks. We strongly suggest using 5,000 mAh or larger LiPo cells with a discharge rating of at least 30C (or high quality 25C batteries such as Traxxas® Power Cells®). Our experience suggests using only mild gear ratios with NiMH cells. Do not attempt to use NiMH cells in extreme setups.

RC4WD Gelande II With Cruiser Body Unboxing

Kev

I am very happy that scale trucks are growing in popularity. I enjoy the time that you spend painting the body to get it just right and the scale accessories do a great job of taking that already good looking vehicle and bringing it to another level. One company that is at the top of scale scene is RC4WD and if you ever went on their website you’ll see that the list of scale accessories and vehicles is mind blowing. One of the latest vehicles to be released from RC4WD is the Gelande II with Cruiser body set. It features an impressive scale chassis, metal driveline components, a FJ Cruiser style body and a lot more. I have one of these trucks and am getting ready to start building. I wanted to share with you guys what comes in the box when you get this truck home and on the work bench.

IMG_5036 (Custom)

Let’s open the box and see what’s inside!

IMG_5050 (Custom)

The parts come packaged in lots of foam. It does a great job of keeping the parts in place and free from damage.

IMG_5065 (Custom)

Here you can see all of the parts that make up the chassis portion of the truck. The electronics are up to you so you may want to grab them before you start building so you can install them when you get to that point in the manual. This way there will be no reason to have to dissemble some sections to do it later.

IMG_5038 (Custom)

One thing that I really like about this kit is that RC4WD does some of the building for you. Items such as the axles, transmission and transfer case are ready to install.

IMG_5039 (Custom)

The frame rails are machined out of 7mm thick aluminum plate. The look of the rails is similar to what you would find on a full-size truck and the black crinkle finish is a nice touch.

IMG_5040 (Custom)

With the truck you get RC4WD’s Dirt Grabber tires and they come molded out of a very soft and sticky rubber. See that wheel? It looks like a steel wagon wheel and it’s actually made of steel. That’s cool!

IMG_5049 (Custom)

The included Cruiser body is very well detailed and has very crisp lines. Several parts are included to complete it including a full interior and you can build it with or without the top. It comes molded in a glossy gray color so you can use that as your base, add detailing and call it a day or you can paint it. I’m going to be laying down several coats of red paint to give my truck that factory look.

IMG_5042 (Custom)

I think it’s cool that you get a complete interior for the Cruiser body set. What blows my mind is the level of detail on the parts such as the dash and door panels. I’m going to take my time to get the paint on them just right.

Building the chassis will be pretty easy and straight forward. The body and interior however will require a lot of work and it will be time consuming. In the end those efforts will pay off. I’m getting the spray booth cleaned out and my work bench ready for building. This is going to be fun.

This 1/5 Scale Alfa Romeo Will Set You Back $65,000 (And It’s Not Even RC)

1931 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza $65,000 model

Yep, you read that right. This awesome recreation of an 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza will cost you a cool $65,000. Unsurprisingly, that kind of money gets you a massive masterpiece that’s built just like the full-size car, and is so well-detailed that I thought it was the real car until I saw those giant-sized fingers holding the keys. The model is over 30 inches long and weights an amazing 43 pounds. The car is offered by The Collector Studio, which offers these details:

This is a scratch-built, museum-quality metal model with over 6200 (!!) components. … The complete electrics and electrical cable assembly are built as per the original car. The dashboard and all instruments (with needles), switches, hand gas (working), adjustable wheel for the hydraulic torsion shock absorbers (with engraved letters), the big tachometer behind the steering wheel, with the two keys for the starter instrument are all there. … All parts are screwed together. The engine is complete with all additional parts, gearbox with the blockade for the reverse gear, ventilation of the clutch, etc. … 0.5mm copper sheet metal was used for the complete body work. … All body parts are fastened with quadratic screws and secured with 0.3mm wire. The windshield is made with real glass. Under the seats you have two boxes, one for the battery and the other for the tools (included). The wheels can be removed and the locking mechanism has two different threads, on the right side left thread, and on the left side right thread. Even the caps are engraved.

As noted, this model is for static display, but could certainly be made radio-control. Or, you could go RTR with a full fleet of five 1/5 scale classics if you’ve got $125,000 burning a hole in your pocket. Call it a bulk discount, that’s just 25,000 per car! According to The Collector Studio, “Each is fully operable by remote control, capable of speeds up to 80 mph!”

A 2200Kv brushless motor gets things moving and Spektrum’s AVC keeps the truck in total control at all times. Wheelies are going to happen a lot with this much power on tap and Losi gave this truck a wheelie bar to keep it from flipping over and onto its lid. Check out the video of the truck in action below. This sucker is insane! Sign me up.

Pit Bull 2.2″ Rock Beast II Tires [Review]

Pit Bull is a well known company in the full-size automotive world, and the company produces tires for off-road vehicles including ATVs and UTVs, 4X4s and even pullers. RC tires are the newest direction for the brand, and the 1/10 scale rubber is designed by the same engineers that get the full-size treads just right. Pit Bull has scale tires in 1.9-inch, 2.2-inch and short course sizes. In this review, we’re going to take a look at the 2.2-inch Rock Beast II.

Pit Bull Rock Beast II 2.2 Review

They look like full-size tires because they were designed by the same guys make the real deal. I mounted the tires on stock Axial Yeti wheels. Click to enlarge.

Without a scale reference to give the size away, it’s hard to tell if you’re looking at Pit Bull’s full-size Rocker LT tire or the Rockbeast II RC tire. Tread detail is crisp right down to the tread siping and fine sidewall lettering (click the photo to enlarge), and the proportions look right. However, I was disappointed to see that foam inserts are not included. According to Pit Bull, they put it to a customer vote and the response was,  “No thanks, save us the money.” Pit Bull sells a 2-stage foam insert separately, but I like to see a basic foam inserts included so the tires are ready to mount right out of the bag. The rubber is Pit Bull’s soft Komp Kompound, which is comparable to other brands’ softest scale-tire compounds.

Pit Bull Rock Beast II 2.2 Review

The Pit Bulls are a perfect fit, and the soft Komp Kompound rubber really grips. Click to enlarge.

Testing
I tested the Rock Beasts with my Axial Yeti using its stock beadlock wheels and the original foam inserts. The Rock Beasts fit well between the rim and locking ring. On the loose dirt the tires had great grip. They easily dug in and threw roost as the front tires lifted into the air under full throttle, and maintained forward traction after the initial blast of power. Steering was also strong, as the well-spaced tread lugs gave ample side bite—enough to risk traction rolling id I pushed hard enough. When traversing exposed roots and rocks, the tires’ soft compound and Axial inserts worked well together to conform to the terrain and maintain traction. I expected significant slippage on hard-packed dirt, but the Rock Beasts surprised me with their grip. The treads seemed to bend and dig in to grab the surface, and slippage was predictable and easy to manage. As expected, the tires gave the Yeti a lazy cornering feel at speed due to the soft inserts and tall sidewalls allowing the tread to fold under the rims. At lower speeds, cornering feel improved. For high speed running, firm inserts will definitely be the way to go. The Rock Beasts really shined on the trails, where scale-appropriate roots, rocks and logs were easily conquered.

PLUS
- Authentic, detailed scale tread design
- Aggressive grip on most surfaces
- Soft compound

MINUS
- Foam inserts not included

Final Word
Pit Bull’s Rock Beast II tires are a great way to add a scale look to your truck and improve its trail manners too. Their soft rubber compound and aggressive tread pattern make them good all-around performers. I’d like to see foam inserts included, but it’s easy enough to add them separately (or recycle a set, as I did for this test). Overall, the Rock Beast IIs earn high marks for fit, quality, performance and style.

Project Old School Update

Project Old School Update

Kev

It’s been a slow go for my old school monster truck due to a recent move. All the parts have been sitting in boxes for a few months and I was finally able to free them and start building again. Here’s a little bit of an update of what is going on with this project.

Tamiya Clod Buster, Clod Buster body, Clod

Once the bed was cut off the cab, I patched it with a sheet of Styrene. That gave the back of the cab a smooth surface but after looking at photos of 80′s truck cabs I found that full size truck cabs weren’t as smooth as what I had. They have several indentations and the bottom is raised slightly in the center for chassis clearance. I wanted to get my cab as close to real as possible so I busted out my rotary tool and cut up the back of the truck. Now the back of the cab looks a little more realistic. The only thing left to do is to give each cut out a bit of a bevel. I’ll do that with some body filler and a custom made spreader.

Tamiya F-350 chassis, Tamiya F-350

I’m using a Tamiya body mount from the High Lift series to mount the cab to the chassis. I don’t want to use screws like the High Lift trucks because the screw heads will take away from the scale look of the truck. I’m going to use magnets instead. They are more than strong enough to hold the cab in place and you won’t see them. I’ll be modifying this mount to make that happen and to give me a little more room for some other items that need to be hidden in the cab.

Clod Buster bed cover, Clod buster tonneau cover, Tamiya Clod buster
The tonneau cover is held in place with magnets. This makes it easy to remove when I need to access the bed tilt mounting screws. After I figure out the roll cage mounting I’ll cover it with fabric and call it done. Just like the cab the cover that I made for the bed opening will have a cutout in the center to provide clearance for the chassis.

Tamiya F-350 roll bar, Tamiya F-350, F-350 High Lift

One thing that I have always liked about old school monster trucks is that they always went wild with chrome roll bars. Triple bars and stacked lights were often found on these trucks.  To make that happen on my truck I’m outfitting it with a roll bar and lights from the Tamiya F-350 High Lift. The roll bar will be sitting on top of my tonneau and need to be cut down slightly to get the top of it to line up better with the top of the cab. The lights will be stacked using custom made mounts and they will be filled with lots of LEDs.

RC4WD V8 Engine, Novak Rockstar motor

Inside the scale V8 engine from RC4WD will be a Novak Rockstar brushed 35 turn brushed motor. I’m not looking to get super fast speeds out of this truck but it will need torque to get it rolling. This motor will make that happen with no problem.

Team Associated ESS-ONE

My truck will have a scale look and why not add a scale sound to go with it. Team Associated’s ESS-ONE sound system will take care of giving that RC4WD scale V8 engine some life. This along a bunch of other stuff will be hidden in the cab of the truck.

IMG_5478-Custom

When I started this build I came up with a game plan by looking  at a bunch of pictures of old school monster trucks. Not matter how many times you look at those pictures there are still unanswered questions. So I picked up this monster truck model kit to help me answer some of those questions. It will show me things like what the fire wall is supposed to look like or what type of fuel cell was used and so on.

That’s it so far. My goal now is to modify my leaf spring mounts to move the springs in a little closer, design the lower mounts for the springs and shocks and get the cab mounted so that I can start designing the bed and hood mount/tilt.

Tekno Updates Their Nitro Buggy With New NB48.3

The NB48.3 is the latest in a line of new vehicles from Tekno RC. The engineers at Tekno have spent a lot of time optimizing the NB48.3 to be the best that it can be in the 1/8-scale nitro buggy category. There’s a long list of features and they include precision ground brake discs, swept front arms, clamping spring perches and a low profile wing mount that lowers the buggy’s center of gravity. Check out the pictures and all that this buggy has to offer below.

Click here for more pics and full info in our Hot News & New Stuff forum

From Tekno RC
When we decided to release a nitro buggy in November of 2013, a lot of people were scratching their heads. What does Tekno RC, a company known for electric innovation, know about nitro? But we were up to the challenge and NB48′s started popping up at tracks across the world. The experience has been invaluable. We learned a lot and we have listened to our customers. The NB48.3 is faster, nimbler, easier to drive and it incorporates some forward thinking that breaks the mold of what a nitro buggy is supposed to be.

We started with the suspension and completely redesigned the geometry. The new design aimed to improve big jump landings while at the same time improve small bump handling and consistency. Longer shocks have been fitted to increase suspension travel and new towers (TKR5268, TKR5269) were designed to optimize shock angles. Revised upper camber link positions on both the front and rear shock tower provide setup options that improve driveability and traction in all conditions. A new piston was designed specifically for the longer shocks (TKR6159) to adjust the compression/rebound characteristics. The lower arms (TKR5184, TKR5286) feature new shock mounting locations. Clamping spring perches (TKR6140) and new shock boots (TKR6144, TKR6145) are included to keep the shocks clean, smooth, and trouble free. We also included the left and right handed shock mounting screws (TKR1240) to ensure you never lose a shock during operation.

The chassis has evolved as well (TKR5303). The EB48 and NB48 proved that moving weight forward results in better cornering so we eliminated the rear engine configuration from the NB48.3 and concentrated on optimizing the handling and flex characteristics of the front engine layout. This improved the gear mesh between the clutch bell and new 46t spur gear (TKR5119) and also helped to calm the rear of the car.

Another area that received an update was the braking. Larger, fully CNC machined, hardened, and ground discs (TKR5345B) replace the old parts. Improved semi-metallic brake pads (TKR5314B) are now separated by springs (TKR5368) to ensure the brakes are only engaged when you want them to be. The biggest change made to the brakes however, is with the linkage (TKR5336B). An all new brake system was designed for better consistency and easier brake bias adjustments.

New rear hubs (TKR5199) allow the option of using the stock CV axles or the upcoming universal driveshafts. We now also offer the rear hubs in aluminum as an option (TKR5199A). At the front of the vehicle are new trailing steering spindles (TKR5193) and spindle carriers (TKR5194). The trailing components vastly improve high speed bump handling in addition to smoothing out the steering response. The vehicle initiates turns more predictably and finishes corners better than ever before. Larger bearings are now fitted to the front spindles for improved durability. The spindles will also accommdate the upcoming universal driveshafts.

The V2 hinge pin braces (TKR5161, TKR5162, TKR5163, TKR5164, TKR5165) have found their way into the new kit. They provide more adjustability than ever before. For example, changing the roll centers at the hinge pin is now an easy task and allows you to set up the vehicle for any conditions. Front arm sweep, kickup, rear anti-squat, and rear toe are all adjustable. A revised chassis was designed to increase clearance for the many V2 hinge pin positions.

Our low profile wing mount (TKR5181) is included to lower the CG of the whole vehicle. A revised front bumper (TKR5166) increases front ground clearance. Straight camber link rod ends (TKR5187) were produced to improve consistency in corners.

Finally, the box setup has been tuned by some of the best drivers in the world to give our customers a vehicle that they can confidently drive in most conditions. With the extensive list of adjustments and improvements, it is easier than ever to tune the vehicle to your driving style and track conditions.

Kev’s Bench: 5 Trucks That Will Inspire You

Kev

When I’m done working on RC stuff for my job during the day, I like to spend my quiet evenings scrolling through RC groups on various social media sites on my phone. I am always looking for the latest trends and trying to come up with cool project to build for the readers of Radio Control Car Action Magazine. There are some really great builds out there that influence my build list and I wanted to share the top 5 trucks that I saw this week. Looks like that list of mine is getting bigger!

IMG_0378 (Custom)

Truck pulling is a scene that is once again gaining traction and I wanted to see what it was all about. A few months ago I was scrolling through one of the pulling groups that I am a part of and found this beast. It’s a great example of a 4WD pulling truck and something that I am going to use as a model for my rig. When watching full-size pulling back in the day I always liked how some of the trucks had tilt bodies and that’s why I fell in love with this truck. I’m not looking to build a truck that can win a pulling comp; instead I want to build a truck that looks as good if not better than this one. For me this build is going to be more about looks than performance.

Bari-truck-Custom

I’m friends (whether he likes it or not) with Bari Musawwir driver of the Zombie monster truck. He is big time into RC and has been preparing a bunch of new solid axle monster trucks for his upcoming 4 Link Nationals race. Some of the stuff that he has come up with is pretty cool and seeing the trucks that he is working on has influenced me to build another scale solid axle truck. Take a look at this rig; that is a pretty unique rear shock setup.

tamiya rig (Custom)

I have never been a fan of cab over trucks but this guy from Model Magic Studios on Facebook is building a very detailed project that has just blown me away. There are a lot of custom touches that make this trucks stand out from others that I see from time to time. This is a picture of the truck in the mock up stage and he is now working on the finish work. I can’t wait to see it when it’s finished.

monster energy rig 2 (Custom)

Axial Racing just wrapped up its annual Axialfest event and there were a lot of awesome trucks being posted over the weekend of the event. The one rig that caught my eye was this Monster Energy rock racer replica that was built by Scott Fluker. I hope it runs as good as it looks!

Yeti MT (Custom)

A while back I built a monster truck using an Axial Yeti as a base and it looks like Aaron Arndt decided to build one of his own. I really love the look of the truck and it has inspired me to make a few changes to my rig. The blue anodizing and carbon fiber of the Hot Racing parts really stand out and I like the use of the Pro-Line Dodge RAM body. It’s designed for use on trail trucks but it looks right at home on top of those Pro-Line Destroyer tires.

There you have it. Five trucks that have inspired me to work on a few sick builds of my own. Have they inspired you? Now I just have to find the time to make my new projects happen!

Gmade Reveals New Komodo Pickup

It looks like Gmade has started an Instagram account but the real news is that the first few posts are teaser shots of a new truck called the Komodo. Let’s take a look at this new beast…

gmade-komodo-2

If you look below the truck you can see that it’s sitting on a Sawback manual which suggests that the Komodo may be based on the same platform. The Sawback has solid axles, leaf spring suspension, stamped steel chassis and so on but based on the truck’s styling and stance I suspect that the leaf spring suspension and shocks may have been replaced by a 4-link suspension and coil over shocks. The tires are new and are those aluminum wheels? That’s a good looking tire and wheel combo!

gmade-komodo-4

Lots of injection molded parts such as a snorkel, cowl cover, mirrors and door handles give the Lexan body extra detail. The roof rack is a good looking piece and we hope that Gmade includes the shovel and sand ladders with it. If you look through the windshield you’ll see the same engine cover that is used in the Sawback.

gmade komodo 3

It looks like the Komodo will come with an LED light set. If you look closely at the rear tail light you can see the tips of three LEDs. Even the rear bumper is an injection molded piece.

We really like what we in these teaser shots from Gmade and can’t wait to get the official press release on the Komodo to see what this new truck has to offer.
